Overview
EN 61000-4-28:2000/A1:2004 is a CLC (CENELEC) amendment to the European EMC standard that specifies testing and measurement techniques for variation of power frequency - immunity tests. It applies to equipment with input current not exceeding 16 A per phase. Amendment A1 updates the original EN 61000-4-28 (based on IEC 61000-4-28:1999/A1:2001) by revising the climatic conditions requirements, redefining the evaluation of test results, and adding a new test report clause.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Immunity testing for equipment with input current ≤ 16 A per phase; addresses how devices respond to slow variations in supply frequency.
- Climatic conditions (clause 8.1): Laboratory ambient conditions must be within limits specified by the EUT and test-equipment manufacturers. Tests must not be performed if relative humidity could cause condensation on the EUT or test equipment. A note encourages committees to consider climate influences when appropriate.
- Evaluation of test results (clause 9): Test outcomes must be classified against a defined performance level (manufacturer/requestor/purchaser). The recommended classification:
- (a) Normal performance within specified limits
- (b) Temporary loss/degradation that self-recovers after disturbance
- (c) Temporary loss/degradation requiring operator intervention to recover
- (d) Non-recoverable loss/degradation (hardware/software damage or data loss)
- Test report (clause 10): The report must contain all information needed to reproduce the test. Required items include test-plan items, identification of the EUT and test equipment (brand, type, serial numbers), special environmental conditions (e.g., shielded enclosure), performance level/criteria, observed effects and durations, rationale for pass/fail, and any specific conditions of use (cable types, shielding, grounding, operating conditions).
Applications and users
- Who uses it: EMC test laboratories, product manufacturers, compliance engineers, and product-certification bodies working with low-current electrical/electronic equipment.
- Practical uses:
- Verifying product immunity to power-frequency variations during design validation and pre-compliance testing
- Establishing reproducible test reports for regulatory submissions and contractual compliance
- Defining pass/fail criteria and documenting environmental/test conditions for quality control and troubleshooting
