Approved by CENELEC on 2 May 2011, this amendment updates requirements for supply connections and references to cable standards to improve fire-safety and material requirements across appliances used in domestic environments.

Key dates:

  • CENELEC approval: 2011-05-02
  • Latest date for national implementation (dop): 2012-05-02
  • Deadline to withdraw conflicting national standards (dow): 2014-05-02

Key topics and requirements

  • Supply connection and external flexible cords (clause 25.7)
    • Adds explicit acceptance of halogen-free thermoplastic compound sheathed flexible cords. Their properties must be at least equivalent to cords with code designations:
      • H03Z1Z1H2-F / H03Z1Z1-F for appliances with mass ≤ 3 kg
      • H05Z1Z1H2-F / H05Z1Z1-F for other appliances
    • Allows cross-linked halogen-free compound sheathed cords with properties at least equivalent to H07ZZ-F.
  • Fire performance and smoke emission (Annex ZC additions)
    • Adds references to EN 50525 series:
      • EN 50525-3-11 - flexible cables with halogen-free thermoplastic insulation, low smoke
      • EN 50525-3-21 - flexible cables with halogen-free crosslinked insulation, low smoke
    • Footnotes updated to clarify EN 50525 relation to IEC 60227 / IEC 60245 series (related but not directly equivalent).

Applications

  • Ensures appliance manufacturers select halogen-free, low-smoke flexible cords appropriate for product mass and class.
  • Guides procurement and specification for power cords and internal flexible wiring used in domestic appliances.
  • Used by testing laboratories, certification bodies and conformity assessors to verify compliance with updated cord and cable requirements.
  • Relevant to cable manufacturers and suppliers to align product markings and performance with the specified code designations.

Who should use this standard

  • Appliance designers and electrical engineers
  • Compliance managers and regulatory authorities
  • Test houses and conformity assessment bodies
  • Cable and accessory manufacturers
  • Procurement teams specifying appliance wiring
