This document specifies the functional, performance, and quality requirements for the interior glazing of rail vehicles including type testing, routine testing, and inspection methods.
This document applies to all rail vehicles.
Determination of the size, shape, orientation and position of interior glazing is outside the scope of this document.
This document does not specify requirements for the interfaces between the interior glazing and the vehicle. Accordingly, this document does not address issues relating to installation and structural integrity.
This document does not apply to interior glazing with a surface less than 0,02 m2 and also emergency device casings (e.g. cover sheets for emergency hammers, passenger alarm systems, etc).
This document does not apply to materials other than glass.
For safety reasons, where the use of a specific type of glass is required, this shall be set out in the technical specification or defined in national rules.

EN 17530:2022/FprA1 - Railway applications: Interior glazing for rail vehicles (CEN) defines functional, performance and quality requirements for interior glazing used in rail vehicles. The standard covers type testing, routine testing and inspection methods for interior glazing across high‑speed rail, heavy rail, light rail, metro and tram applications. It applies to glazing materials (not other materials) and excludes very small items (surface < 0.02 m2), emergency device casings, sizing/positioning decisions and the interfaces/installation or structural integrity of glazing systems. Specific types of glazing not covered (e.g. bullet‑proof, fire‑proof) are outside the standard’s scope.

  • Single impact test: for interior flat glass tests are carried out on both faces; for interior curved glass only the convex face is tested. Asymmetrical laminated glass requires testing once on each side; tests on both sides of a sample count as one test.
  • Silk‑screen serigraphy (screen printing) should be inspected from both sides according to final installation on the vehicle.

  • Broadened definition of “partition screen” to glazing used to separate or partition different areas (not limited to passenger areas).

• Use EN 17530:2022/FprA1 when specifying, procuring or certifying interior glazing for passenger compartments, gangways, partition screens, internal windows, and other internal transparent elements in rail vehicles.
