Overview

EN 1870-13:2007/prA1 is a Type 2 amendment to the European standard for the safety of woodworking machines - specifically horizontal beam panel sawing machines. Prepared by CEN/TC 142, this draft amendment updates normative references, clarifies marking and manual requirements, adds ergonomic and handling provisions, and introduces Annex ZB to clarify the relationship with Directive 2006/42/EC (Machinery Directive). The amendment is intended to improve operator safety, machine stability and compliance documentation.

Key Topics

  • Updated normative references: several referenced standards are replaced with their 2007/2008 versions (for example EN ISO 13857:2008, EN 60825-1:2007, EN 61310-1:2008 and updated EN ISO 13849/13850 editions). This aligns the machine standard with current safety reference documents.
  • List of significant hazards: additions in Clause 4 link specific hazards to subclauses (e.g., 5.2.2 and 5.4.5) for clearer hazard mapping.
  • Ergonomics & handling (5.4.5): components with a mass exceeding 25 kg must include appropriate fittings (lifting lugs or equivalent) to allow secure use of lifting devices and to prevent overturning, uncontrolled movement or falling during transport, assembly, dismantling and scrapping.
  • Marking (6.2): required marking now explicitly includes the business name and address of the manufacturer (or authorised representative), year of construction, and the designation of the machinery and series/type.
  • Instruction handbook (6.3): new and revised entries require information on preventing overturn/fall during the machine life cycle, procedures for accidents or breakdowns (including safe unblocking), and spare-part specifications where they affect operator safety.
  • Annex ZB: informative annex establishing correspondence between this standard and the Essential Requirements of Directive 2006/42/EC, clarifying which clauses support presumed conformity.

Applications

This amendment is relevant to:

  • Manufacturers updating designs, markings and manuals to meet the revised clauses.
  • Design engineers applying lifting and ergonomic provisions for heavy components.
  • Safety managers and compliance teams mapping machine clauses to the Machinery Directive.
  • Purchasers and service providers who need to verify marking, documentation and safe handling features.

Practical benefits include improved machine transport and assembly safety, clearer compliance evidence for CE marking, and reduced risk of accidents during installation, maintenance and operation.

Related Standards

Key related documents referenced or updated in the amendment include:

  • EN ISO 13857:2008 (safety distances)
  • EN 60825-1:2007 (laser safety - equipment classification)
  • EN 61310-1:2008 (indication, marking and actuation)
  • EN ISO 13849-1:2008 / EN ISO 13849-2:2008 (safety-related parts of control systems)
  • EN ISO 13850:2008 (emergency stop)

Also see Annex ZA and the newly added Annex ZB for conformity mapping to Directive 2006/42/EC.

For manufacturers and safety professionals, EN 1870-13:2007/prA1 provides targeted, actionable updates to improve machine safety and regulatory alignment for horizontal beam panel sawing machines.
