Packaging - Complete, filled transport packages and unit loads - Impact test by rotational drop
This European Standard specifies methods for carrying out a rotational impact test on complete, filled transport packages or unit loads, by dropping. It can be performed either as a single test to investigate the effects of rotational impact or as part of a sequence of tests designed to measure the ability of a package or unit load to withstand a distribution system that includes a rotational impact hazard.
Verpackung - Versandfertige Packstücke und Ladeeinheiten - Vertikale Stoßprüfung durch Kippen
1 Anwendungsbereich

Overview
EN 14149:2003 - Packaging: Complete, filled transport packages and unit loads - Impact test by rotational drop (CEN) defines a standardized rotational impact (rotational drop) test for complete, filled transport packages and unit loads. The standard prescribes how to raise and release a package so that an edge, face or corner strikes a rigid impact surface, either as a single investigation of rotational impact or as part of a sequence of distribution durability tests.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: Tilt a package about an edge or corner to a predetermined height (hc) and release so it falls freely onto a rigid impact surface.
- Test methods:
- Method A (Face impact): Drop flat on a face by tilting about one edge.
- Method B (Edge impact): Drop on an edge by tilting about a parallel edge with support block(s).
- Method C1 / C2 (Corner impact): Drop on a corner using two blocks (C1) or one block (C2). C2 may have lower reproducibility.
- Apparatus:
- Lifting arrangement with height accuracy of ±2%.
- Secure holding and unobstructed release mechanism.
- Supporting blocks positioned within 10 cm of edges/corners where required.
- Impact surface specifications: mass at least 50× the heaviest test item; flatness such that no two points differ by more than 2 mm; rigidity defined as ≤0.1 mm deformation under 10 kg on 100 mm²; sufficiently large to receive the package.
- Test item preparation: Packages should be filled with intended contents when possible; acceptable to use simulated contents that closely match physical properties and dimensions.
- Conditioning: Test items are conditioned per EN ISO 2233 prior to testing; testing ideally performed in similar atmospheric conditions.
- Reporting: Test reports must reference EN 14149, include laboratory and client details, test identification, dates, full item description (mass, materials, closures, cushioning), methods used, drop heights, block heights, deviations, observations (e.g., rolling), and climatic conditions.
Applications and who uses it
- Packaging engineers and designers evaluating package robustness against rotational impacts during handling and transport.
- Test laboratories performing standardized drop and distribution testing for validation and certification.
- Manufacturers, shippers and logistics providers assessing pack performance in distribution systems that include tipping, edge or corner impacts.
- Quality assurance and compliance teams requiring repeatable, documented test results for supply chain risk management.
