Packaging - Complete, filled transport packages and unit loads - Sinusoidal vibration tests using a variable frequency (ISO 8318:2000)

This International Standard specifies two methods for carrying out a sinusoidal vibration test on a complete, filled
transport package or unit load using a variable frequency. These tests may be used to assess the performance of a
package or an unit load in terms of its strength or the protection that it offers to its contents when it is subjected to
vertical vibration. Each may be performed either as a single test to investigate the effects of vertical vibration or as
part of a sequence of tests designed to measure the ability of a package or unit load to withstand a distribution
system that includes a vibration hazard.

Overview

SIST EN ISO 8318:2003 (ISO 8318:2000), titled Packaging - Complete, filled transport packages and unit loads - Sinusoidal vibration tests using a variable frequency, is an international standard developed by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST). This standard outlines two primary test methods for subjecting complete, filled transport packages or unit loads to vertical, sinusoidal vibration. Using a variable frequency, the tests are designed to evaluate the ability of packaging to withstand vibration hazards typically encountered during distribution and transport.

The objective is to assess both the strength of the package and its effectiveness in protecting contents, either as a standalone test or as part of a suite of package performance tests.

Key Topics

  • Sinusoidal Vibration Testing: The standard specifies procedures for applying variable-frequency sinusoidal vibration to filled transport packages and unit loads. It describes two methods that focus on vertical vibration characteristics.
  • Performance Assessment: Provides guidance to evaluate package strength and content protection under simulated transport conditions.
  • Variable Frequency: Tests are conducted with vibration frequencies ranging typically from 3 Hz to 100 Hz, ensuring broad coverage of real-world transportation vibrational hazards.
  • Test Preparation and Reporting:
    • Step-by-step processes for preparing specimens
    • Conditioning requirements in accordance with ISO 2233
    • Detailed reporting requirements for consistent and reliable results

Core elements include:

  • Specification of vibration table requirements
  • Instructions for accurate specimen preparation and restraint
  • Definitions for test item and testing conditions

Applications

SIST EN ISO 8318:2003 is essential across multiple industries where packaging integrity during transportation is critical. Primary applications include:

  • Quality Assurance in Packaging Manufacturing: Used by packaging designers and manufacturers to validate packaging performance for new or modified containers.
  • Logistics and Supply Chain: Supports logistic companies and transporters in assessing how packaging will fare under transit vibrations, thereby reducing damage claims.
  • Consumer Goods and Electronics: Ensures protection for sensitive or high-value products during shipping.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Helps organizations meet industry, national, and international shipping regulations and internal bench-marking standards.

The standard assists in optimizing packaging design by identifying weaknesses exposed by vibration hazards, leading to improvements that enhance product safety and minimize losses during shipping.

Related Standards

For robust packaging performance testing, the following international standards are referenced or used in conjunction with SIST EN ISO 8318:2003:

  • ISO 2206 - Packaging - Complete, filled transport packages - Identification of parts when testing
  • ISO 2233 - Packaging - Complete, filled transport packages and unit loads - Conditioning for testing
  • ISO 2234 - Packaging - Complete, filled transport packages and unit loads - Stacking test using static load

These standards collectively provide a comprehensive framework for testing, conditioning, and identifying packaging components, ensuring that vibration testing is both effective and applicable to real-world logistics scenarios.

By adhering to SIST EN ISO 8318:2003, companies can ensure that their packaging solutions deliver reliable protection during transport, meet compliance requirements, and demonstrate commitment to product quality and safety. Using standardized vibration testing methods enhances consistency, supports innovation in packaging design, and ultimately reduces supply chain losses.

ISO 8318:2000(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard ISO 8318 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 122, Packaging, Subcommittee
SC 3, Performance requirements and tests for means of packaging, packages and unit loads (as required by
ISO/TC 122).
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 8318:1986) which has been technically revised.
