Packaging - Complete, filled transport packages and unit loads - Water-spray test (ISO 2875:2000)

This International Standard specifies a method for testing the resistance of a complete, filled transport package or a
unit load to water spray or the protection it gives to its contents from water spray. It may also be used to
precondition a complete, filled transport package or a unit load prior to another test to investigate reduction in
strength caused by exposure to water.
The test is performed on the test specimen as prepared for transport and may form part of a test sequence.

Overview

SIST EN ISO 2875:2003 is an international standard developed by CEN and ISO that specifies a method for testing the resistance of complete, filled transport packages and unit loads to water spray. The Water-spray test evaluates how well packaging protects its contents from water spray exposure during transit and storage conditions. The test can also be used as a preconditioning step to assess the reduction in package strength after water exposure.

This standard ensures that packaging solutions meet industry requirements for durability and protection against water ingress, contributing to safe and reliable transport of goods.

Key Topics

  • Test Scope: Applies to complete, filled transport packages and unit loads as prepared for transport.
  • Test Methods: Two methods are outlined:
    • Method A - Continuous spraying on the top surface.
    • Method B - Intermittent spraying with sprays moving across the package.
  • Apparatus Requirements:
    • Controlled temperature conditions (5°C to 30°C).
    • Spray nozzles positioned at least 2 meters above test specimen.
    • Uniform water spray rate calibrated between 80 and 120 liters per square meter per hour.
  • Test Specimen Preparation:
    • Use intended or simulated contents matching physical properties of the original goods.
    • Packages must be sealed and conditioned per ISO 2233.
  • Calibration: Ensures uniform water distribution and accurate flow rate using calibrated containers.
  • Test Procedure: Water spray applied vertically for a defined period; package and contents assessed for water infiltration or weakening.
  • Result Reporting: Detailed documentation including test conditions, specimen description, environmental factors, method used, and observations.

Applications

SIST EN ISO 2875:2003 is essential for industries requiring reliable transportation of goods with protection against water exposure, such as:

  • Logistics and Shipping: Verifies packaging performance against environmental conditions encountered during shipping.
  • Food and Beverage Packaging: Ensures water spray or humidity does not compromise product quality or safety.
  • Pharmaceutical and Medical Supplies: Maintains product integrity by preventing moisture ingress.
  • Consumer Goods: Protects finished goods and retail products from water damage in distribution networks.
  • Industrial Components: Confirms packaging robustness for heavy-duty and unit loads exposed to variable weather conditions.

Using this standard helps organizations optimize packaging design, evaluate packaging performance under simulated conditions, and comply with international packaging and transport regulations.

Related Standards

  • ISO 2206: Identification of parts of complete, filled transport packages during testing.
  • ISO 2233: Conditioning of complete, filled transport packages and unit loads for testing.
  • EN 22875:1992: Previous European standard for water-spray testing, superseded by SIST EN ISO 2875:2003.

Compliance with SIST EN ISO 2875:2003 aligns with CEN/CENELEC regulations and supports harmonized testing across European and international markets, ensuring consistent quality assurance in packaging performance.

By adhering to SIST EN ISO 2875:2003, manufacturers and transporters guarantee their packaging’s effectiveness in protecting goods against water exposure, enhancing transport safety, and minimizing product loss. This contributes significantly to supply chain reliability and consumer satisfaction.

ISO 2875:2000(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard ISO 2875 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 122, Packaging, Subcommittee
SC 3, Performance requirements and tests for means of packaging, packages and unit loads (as required by
ISO/TC 122).
