Overview

EN ISO 13355:2016 (ISO 13355:2016) - published by CEN/ISO - specifies a standardized method for performing a vertical random vibration test on complete, filled transport packages and unit loads. The standard defines how to reproduce vertical vibration hazards using random excitation, and provides assessment methods to evaluate package strength and the protection offered to contents. Tests can be run as standalone vertical-vibration checks or as part of a multi-test sequence simulating a distribution system.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Test scope: Complete, filled transport packages and unit loads (referred to as the test specimen).
  • Vibration method: Vertical random excitation (random vibration theory per IEC 60068-2-64).
  • Frequency range: Nominally 2 Hz to 200 Hz with at least 1 Hz resolution (low-end adaptable by agreement).
  • Apparatus: Stiff vibration table (lower resonant frequency above the test frequency) of suitable size, power and displacement.
  • Measurement & control:
    • Accelerometers, signal conditioning and data system capable of generating required power spectral density (PSD).
    • Analysis with at least 120 statistical degrees of freedom; data/control response accurate to ±5% across test band.
  • Test procedure highlights:
    • Condition specimens per ISO 2233 and mount per ISO 4180 guidance.
    • Centre of gravity near table centre; horizontal acceleration components limited to ≤20% of vertical.
    • Start at –6 dB below test level to equalize PSD, then ramp to full level for the specified duration.
    • Tolerances: RMS acceleration ±15%; PSD deviation ±3 dB across the frequency range.
  • Documentation: Test report must reference ISO 13355 and record test conditions, dates, specimen IDs and responsible personnel.
  • Annexes: Annex A (normative) provides a generic transportation PSD; Annex B (informative) gives PSDs derived from recorded data.

Practical applications and users

  • Who uses it: Packaging engineers, test laboratories, manufacturers, logistics and freight companies, quality assurance teams, and standards bodies.
  • Why use it:
    • Validate package design against real-world vertical vibration hazards.
    • Compare packaging materials and cushioning strategies.
    • Support compliance testing, supplier acceptance, and failure analysis.
    • Integrate into a full distribution test programme to simulate transport damage mechanisms.

Introduction
A random vibration test is a more realistic method in reproducing environmental vibration during
transportation than sinusoidal vibration test. For this reason, if suitable laboratory facilities are
available, a vibration test is more preferable than any fixed or swept frequency sinusoidal vibration
tests similar to those given in ISO 2247 and ISO 8318.

The article discusses the SIST EN ISO 13355:2017 standard, which provides a method for conducting a vertical random vibration test on complete, filled transport packages and unit loads. The test evaluates the strength or protection of a package and its contents when subjected to vertical vibration. This test can be performed individually or as part of a series of tests to assess the ability of a specimen to withstand a distribution system with vibration hazards.
