Overview
EN ISO 28927-5:2009/A1:2015 specifies standardized test methods for evaluation of vibration emission from hand‑held portable power tools, specifically drills and impact drills. This document is an amendment (A1:2015) to ISO 28927‑5:2009 and updates the test procedure by defining feed force values used when measuring vibration levels. It is published by CEN and endorsed as a European Standard (EN ISO).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Purpose: Provide repeatable, comparable methods to measure vibration emission (hand‑arm vibration) from drills and impact drills.
- Amendment focus: Feed force used during testing - a revised Table 1 replaces the previous feed force values for drills without impact action.
- Feed force table (high level):
- Breaks down test feed force by free running speed, drill diameter, and tool grip type (pistol grip vs straight/angle drills).
- Specifies numerical feed force values (N) and acceptable variation ranges for different speed and diameter ranges.
- Test relevance: Ensures consistent operator load conditions so vibration emission measurements are comparable across laboratories and manufacturers.
- Standards context: Part of the ISO 28927 series of test methods for vibration emission of hand‑held power tools; prepared by ISO/TC 118 in collaboration with CEN/TC 231.
Applications and who uses it
- Manufacturers of drills and impact drills use the standard to:
- Design and validate tools with lower vibration emission.
- Provide accurate vibration data for technical documentation and labels.
- Independent test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies use it to:
- Perform standardized vibration performance tests for certification and benchmarking.
- Health & safety professionals and occupational hygienists use the results to:
- Assess worker exposure to hand‑arm vibration and support risk management and PPE selection.
- Procurement and compliance teams reference the standard to meet regulatory requirements (it supports essential requirements of EU directives) and for supplier comparisons.
Related standards
- ISO 28927 series (other parts cover different tool types and related measurement procedures).
- National adoptions and translations (EN ISO versions) ensure harmonized use across CEN member countries.
