Specifications for particular types of winding wires - Part 44: Aromatic polyimide tape wrapped rectangular copper wire, class 240 (IEC 60317-44:1997/A1:2010)

Amandma A1:2010 je dodatek k standardu SIST EN 60317-44:2001
This part of IEC 317 specifies the requirements of tape wrapped rectangular copper winding wire of class 240. The insulation consists of one or two wrappings of aromatic polyimide tape. Class 240 is a thermal class that requires a temperature index of 240 and a heat shock temperature of at least 260 C. NOTE – In some countries, e.g. Canada, Russia, USA, this product is assigned a class 220. The tape is coated on one or both sides with a suitable adhesive, for instance, fluorinated ethylene propylene. After wrapping, the tape is heat-sealed to form a continuous and adherent sheath. Specific requirements may be subject to contract. The temperature in degrees Celsius corresponding to the temperature index is not necessarily that at which the wire is recommended to be used and this will depend on many factors, including the types of equipment involved. The range of nominal conductor dimensions covered by this standard is:
– width: min. 2,00 mm, max. 16,00 mm;
– thickness: min. 0,80 mm, max. 5,60 mm.
The specified combinations of width and thickness as well as the specified ratio
width/thickness are given in IEC 317-0-2. When a reference is made to winding wire according to this standard, the following information should be given:
– reference to IEC 60317-44;
– dimension of the nominal conductor (width x thickness);
– grade.
Example: 60317-44 IEC 4,00 mm x 1,00 mm grade A2

- širina: najmanj 2,00 mm, največ 16,00 mm;
- debelina: najmanj 0,80 mm, največ 5,60 mm.
Določene kombinacije širine in debeline ter opredeljeno razmerje
širina/debelina so navedeni v IEC 317-0-2.
- sklic na IEC 60317-44;
- dimenzije nominalnega prevodnika (širina x debelina);
- stopnja.
Primer: 60317-44 IEC 4,00 mm x 1,00 mm razred A2.

Overview

EN 60317-44:1997/A1:2010 (IEC 60317-44:1997/A1:2010) specifies requirements for aromatic polyimide tape wrapped rectangular copper winding wire, class 240. This European amendment (A1:2010) updates the original EN/IEC publication and provides harmonized technical and normative references used for manufacturing, testing and national adoption across CENELEC members.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Product definition: rectangular (flat) copper conductor wrapped with aromatic polyimide tape - intended as a high-temperature class 240 winding wire (temperature class designation as given in the title).
  • Amendment changes: this A1 document modifies the 1997 base standard and replaces Annex ZA with updated normative reference mapping for European use. It also records procedural changes such as prefixing normative references with “60” where applicable.
  • Test-method references: the standard depends on established test procedures including IEC 60172 (temperature index determination), IEC 60317‑0‑2 (general requirements for enamelled rectangular wire), and the IEC 60851 series (winding wire test methods). ISO 3 is referenced for preferred numbers.
  • Specific test notes: the amendment explicitly replaces/marks some clauses as “test inappropriate” - for example, the clause on elongation and a newly added pin hole test are noted as not applicable for this taped polyimide-wrapped product.
  • Compliance and implementation: approved by CENELEC on 2010-04-01 with national adoption dates set for implementation and withdrawal of conflicting standards.

Applications and users

  • Typical applications: high-temperature windings in electric motors, transformers, coils, power inductors and other electrotechnical equipment where compact rectangular conductor geometry and high thermal endurance (class 240) are required.
  • Who uses this standard: winding wire manufacturers, motor/transformer designers, procurement and specification engineers, QA/inspection labs, certification bodies and component suppliers needing harmonized European/IEC requirements for polyimide-insulated rectangular copper wires.

Related standards

  • IEC 60172 - Test procedure for temperature index of enamelled winding wires
  • IEC 60317-0-2 - General requirements for enamelled rectangular copper wire
  • IEC 60851 series - Winding wires - Test methods
  • ISO 3 - Preferred numbers

This concise reference helps technical teams and procurement professionals quickly understand the scope, testing context and practical relevance of EN 60317-44:1997/A1:2010 for aromatic polyimide tape wrapped rectangular copper winding wire, class 240.
