Overview - EN 10143:2006 (hot-dip coated steel tolerances)

EN 10143:2006 is a CEN European Standard that specifies tolerances on dimensions and shape for continuously hot‑dip coated flat steel products. It covers zinc (Z), zinc‑iron (ZF), zinc‑aluminium (ZA), aluminium‑zinc (AZ) and aluminium‑silicon (AS) coatings on low‑carbon, high‑strength and structural steels. Applicable product forms are sheet, wide strip, slit wide strip and cut lengths with nominal thickness from 0.20 mm to 6.50 mm. The standard defines measurement rules, designation and delivery conditions for coated steel used in cold forming and structural applications.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope & exclusions: Applies to continuous hot‑dip coated flat products; excludes hot‑rolled uncoated sheet/strip (EN 10051) and uncoated or electrolytically coated cold‑rolled sheet/strip (EN 10131).
  • Designation and ordering: Standardized product designation order (product type, EN reference, nominal thickness/width/length and flags for special tolerances S, FS, CS).
  • Condition of delivery: Options for normal or special tolerances on thickness, width, length, flatness and camber.
  • Thickness tolerances: Specified in tables according to nominal thickness, nominal width and steel yield strength (Re or Rp0,2) - four yield‑strength groups are used. For heavy coatings (Z450, Z600) tolerances are increased by ±0.01 mm.
  • Measurement locations: Thickness measured at points more than 40 mm from edges (or on centreline for slit widths ≤ 80 mm).
  • Width and length tolerances: Separate tables for sheet/wide strip (≥ 600 mm) and slit wide strip (< 600 mm). Length tolerances vary by nominal length (see Table 7).
  • Flatness, camber and out‑of‑squareness: Flatness tolerances depend on steel grade (clauses for Re/Rp0,2 < 360 MPa and ≥ 360 MPa). Specific limits and measurement methods are provided.
  • Special cases: Coil weld regions may permit increased thickness tolerances (up to +50% over 10 m) unless otherwise agreed.

Applications - who uses EN 10143 and why

  • Steel mills and coil coaters use EN 10143 for product specification, quality control and contractual delivery of galvanized/Al‑coated material.
  • Stamping and cold‑forming manufacturers (automotive, appliance) rely on thickness and flatness tolerances for forming performance.
  • Building, roofing and cladding suppliers use width, length and camber limits to ensure fit and installation quality.
  • Steel processors, slitters and service centres apply slit width and camber requirements when preparing coils and cut lengths.
  • Procurement, inspection and test laboratories reference the standard for acceptance criteria, inspection protocols and dispute resolution.

Related standards

  • EN 10292, EN 10326, EN 10327, prEN 10336 (product/steel specifications)
  • EN 10079 (definitions)
  • See EN 10051 and EN 10131 for excluded product types.
