Steel for packaging - Flat steel products intended for use in contact with foodstuffs, products or beverages for human and animal consumption - Non alloyed electrolytic chromium/chromium oxide coated steel

This document specifies the base steel to be used and the composition of the metallic coating to be used for the manufacture of lacquered electrolytic chromium/chromium oxide coated steel and articles which, as a finished product, are intended for use in direct contact with foodstuffs or products for human or animal consumption.
The main examples of use are:
-   drinks cans,
-   food cans,
-   closures and ends.
The material should be chosen in accordance with the conditions for its use.
This standard does not apply to categories of steel other than steel for packaging intended for use in contact with foodstuffs, products or beverages for human consumption or animal consumption.

Dieses Dokument legt den Stahl und die Zusammensetzung des metallischen Überzugs fest, der für die Herstellung von elektrolytisch spezialverchromtem Stahl und Gegenständen verwendet wird, welche als fertiges Produkt für die Verwendung in direkter Berührung mit Lebensmitteln oder Produkten für den menschlichen und tierischen Verzehr bestimmt sind.

Le présent document spécifie l’acier à utiliser et la composition du revêtement métallique servant à la fabrication de fer chromé verni et d’objets qui à l’état de produit fini sont destinés à entrer en contact direct avec des denrées, et produits pour l’alimentation de l’homme et des animaux.
Les principaux exemples d’application sont les suivants :
-   boîtes boissons ;
-   boîtes pour conserves alimentaires ;
-   capsules et couvercles.
Le choix du matériau est en adéquation avec les conditions d’emploi.
Le présent document ne s’applique pas aux catégories d’aciers hors emballages destinés à entrer en contact avec des denrées, produits et boissons pour l’alimentation de l’homme et des animaux.

EN 10335:2024 is a CEN European standard that defines requirements for non‑alloyed electrolytic chromium/chromium‑oxide coated steel intended for direct contact with foodstuffs and beverages (for human and animal consumption). It specifies the base steel chemistry, composition of the metallic chromium/chromium‑oxide coating, and delivery requirements for lacquered products used in packaging such as drinks cans, food cans, closures and ends. EN 10335:2024 supersedes EN 10335:2005 and references EN 10202:2022 for coating and dimensional requirements.

• Coating: The chromium/chromium‑oxide coating is described as a duplex film (metallic chromium adjacent to the steel with a hydrated chromium oxide/hydroxide top layer). Coating production can be by hexavalent or trivalent chromium processes (ECCS or ECCS‑RC). Coating requirements and tests follow EN 10202:2022.
• Oiling and surface treatment: Products are delivered oiled unless otherwise specified; oils must be suitable for food contact as defined by EN 10202:2022. Purchasers may specify food‑contact‑compatible oils.
• Acceptance, marking and traceability:
  • Conformity checks on request.
  • Each coil or bundle must be labelled with the standard reference, manufacturer name/trademark and batch identification.
• Ordering information: Purchasers must provide required data at enquiry/order time; dimensional tolerances and designation follow EN 10202.

European Committee for Iron and Steel Standardization” , the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an
identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by May 2025 and conflicting national standards shall be
withdrawn at the latest by May 2025.
