Overview

SIST-TS CEN/TS 17730:2022 specifies standardized methods for determining critical properties of compost and solid digestate when used in fertilizing products. This technical specification is applicable to compost and digestates classified under Component Material Categories (CMC) 3, 4, and 5, as defined by Regulation (EU) 2019/1009. The document outlines approaches for the assessment of macroscopic impurities, the oxygen uptake rate, and the self-heating factor, supporting product safety, quality control, and regulatory compliance within the fertilizer industry.

Key Topics

This standard addresses the following essential properties of compost and digestate for their use as fertilizing components:

  • Macroscopic Impurities: Guidelines for detecting and measuring materials such as glass, metals, and plastics larger than 2 mm in compost and digestate. This supports ensuring product purity and environmental safety.
  • Oxygen Uptake Rate: Methods for determining the aerobic biological activity by measuring oxygen consumption, which is an important indicator of material stability and maturity.
  • Self-Heating Factor: Procedures for evaluating the potential for spontaneous heating (self-heating) in compost, which can affect storage, safety, and product quality.

These parameters ensure that compost and solid digestate used in fertilizers comply with EU regulations and industry best practices.

Applications

Proper assessment of compost and digestate properties is relevant to a range of sectors and end-users, including:

  • Fertilizer Manufacturers: Enables consistent production and rigorous quality control of compost and digestate-based fertilizing products.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Assists in fulfilling the requirements of Regulation (EU) 2019/1009 concerning the placing of fertilizing products on the EU market.
  • Environmental Protection: Minimizes the risk of contaminants (such as plastics, glass, or metal impurities) entering agricultural soils, supporting sustainable farming and circular economy goals.
  • Product Certification: Provides a basis for certifying the quality and safety of compost and digestate for agricultural use, enhancing market credibility and consumer trust.
  • Laboratories: Standardizes testing methods for impurities, oxygen uptake, and self-heating, promoting analytical consistency and comparability of results across the EU.

These applications support enhanced fertilizer product performance, compliance, and environmental stewardship in modern agriculture.

Related Standards

The following standards are referenced within SIST-TS CEN/TS 17730:2022 and provide essential complementary guidance:

  • CEN/TS 17732:2022 – Soil improvers and growing media - Terminology
  • CEN/TS 17733:2022 – Soil improvers and growing media - Sampling and sample preparation
  • EN 16087-1:2020 – Determination of the aerobic biological activity - Oxygen uptake rate (OUR)
  • EN 16087-2:2011 – Determination of the aerobic biological activity - Self-heating test for compost
  • CEN/TS 16202:2013 – Sludge, treated biowaste, and soil - Determination of impurities and stones

These related technical standards ensure harmonized terminology, reliable testing procedures, and robust sample processing within the European fertilizer and soil amendment sectors.

By following SIST-TS CEN/TS 17730:2022, organizations ensure compliance, quality assurance, and environmental responsibility in the use and production of compost and digestate-based fertilizing products, supporting best practices in sustainable agriculture.
