Overview

EN 15583-2:2012 - published by CEN - specifies testing criteria and requirements for snow plough override and bump security systems. It applies to front-mounted (mounted on front-mounting plates per EN 15432) and side-mounted snow ploughs used in winter maintenance, and covers single-side snow ploughs and variable V-ploughs. The standard defines how to test override/bump security devices to assess their behaviour when the plough encounters obstacles in traffic. Not covered: V-shaped ploughs, vehicle registration/approval, carrier-vehicle manufacturer requirements, and general safety (handled in EN 13021).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and applicability: Front-mounted and side-mounted snow ploughs; single-side and variable V designs only.
  • Static testing:
    • Measures resistance forces (reported in daNm) of override systems using a test bench.
    • Test bench configuration: base frame, adjustable attachment plate (per EN 15432), mobile obstacle and plate/obstacle cylinders.
    • Obstacle dimensions (version indicated): Ø 100 mm, H 50 mm for static and dynamic scenarios.
    • Forces derived from cylinder pressures (Pa, Pmax) and cylinder effective area (A) using standard formulae.
    • Side-reverse static test (FSrev) with force applied horizontally at 200 mm above ground; test performed at maximum declared attachment angle.
  • Dynamic testing:
    • Valid for mounted and side-mounted single-side ploughs and ice scrapers (not for V-ploughs).
    • Tests executed in three positions across the blade (centre ±200 mm and outer elements up to 400 mm).
    • Two obstacle versions: small obstacle Ø 100 mm / H ≥ 50 mm and large obstacle Ø 500 mm / H ≥ 20 mm.
    • Prescribed testing speeds (Table 1): front/side-mounted ploughs - Version 1 at 25 km/h, Version 2 at 40 km/h; ice scrapers - 5 km/h.
    • Test repetitions: three per position (total tests recorded in protocol - Annex A).
    • Validation criteria: after dynamic testing there must be no visible bending, breaking, or cracking.

Practical applications

  • Manufacturers: verify and document override/bump system performance during product development and type testing.
  • Independent test laboratories: implement standardized static and dynamic test methods and produce test protocols (Annex A).
  • Procurement and road authorities: use test results to specify performance requirements for roadside winter maintenance equipment.
  • Maintenance planners and contractors: understand expected behaviour of ploughs in traffic conditions and select appropriate models.

Related standards

  • EN 13021 - safety requirements for winter service machines
  • EN 15583-1:2009 - product description and requirements for snow ploughs

EN 15583-2:2012 provides a practical, repeatable framework for assessing override and bump security of snow ploughs, improving reliability and consistency in winter maintenance equipment testing and procurement.
