Overview

EN 61747-4-1:2004 (CLC adoption of IEC 61747-4-1) defines the essential ratings and characteristics for matrix colour liquid crystal display (LCD) modules. It establishes the technical parameters that manufacturers, integrators and test laboratories should specify and test for colour LCD modules - including active and passive matrix types such as TFT and TFD cells, with or without integrated light sources. This part of the IEC 61747 series is intended to be used in conjunction with EN 61747-1:1999 (generic specification).

Key topics and requirements

The standard specifies the essential electrical, optical and mechanical information that must be declared for matrix colour LCD modules, including:

  • Module type and construction
    • Active/passive matrix, TFT/TFD examples, integrated light source options.
  • Modes of operation
    • Addressing modes and optical modes (reflective, transmissive, transflective), number of colours and grey levels, normally white/black operation.
  • Outline and mechanical details
    • Materials (glass, plastic, metal), bezel and connector types, overall and viewing-area dimensions, preferred viewing direction, pin layouts.
  • Limiting values (absolute maximum rating system)
    • Ambient operating and storage temperature ranges, supply voltages (logic and LCD drive), input signal voltage limits, integrated light source voltages, maximum soldering temperature and related restrictions.
  • Electrical and optical characteristics
    • Supply and input signal voltages/currents, operating frequencies (frame, oscillator), supply currents, light-source current, contrast ratio, luminance and luminance uniformity, viewing angle definitions, rise/fall times, transmittance/reflectance (regular/diffuse), and chromaticity coordinates for white, red, green and blue.
  • Supplementary information
    • Timing and interface specifications, voltage sequencing, temperature-dependent operating ranges, handling/ESD precautions, installation guidance, safety notes, and measurement characterizations.

Applications and users

EN 61747-4-1 is practical for:

  • LCD module manufacturers - to define datasheet limits and test criteria.
  • Display system designers and OEMs - to select modules and define electrical/optical requirements.
  • Test laboratories and QA teams - to verify compliance and performance (contrast, luminance, viewing angle, electrical limits).
  • Procurement and compliance officers - to ensure specified modules meet industry-recognized ratings.
  • Integrators of consumer electronics, industrial HMIs, medical devices and automotive displays - where predictable optical and electrical behaviour is critical.

Keywords: EN 61747-4-1, matrix colour LCD modules, essential ratings and characteristics, TFT display, contrast ratio, luminance, viewing angle, supply voltage, LCD module specification.

Related standards

  • EN 61747-1:1999 / IEC 61747-1 (Generic specification) - to be used together with this part.
  • IEC 61747 series (parts covering cells, tests and measurement methods) for broader display device requirements and test methods.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and
non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates
closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined
by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be
