Abstract

This European Standard specifies the grades of continuously hot rolled low carbon steel sheet and strip (in coils) for cold forming.
Depending on its actual width, strip is classified as:
-   hot rolled wide strip if its width is greater than or equal to 600 mm;
-   hot rolled slit wide strip if its width is less than 600 mm.
For each grade, it specifies the chemical composition and the mechanical properties.
This European Standard is applicable to products of thickness not less than 1,0 mm and not exceeding 11 mm.
This European Standard is not applicable to products covered by other standards, such as:
-   hot rolled products of non-alloy structural steels for general use (see EN 10025 all parts);
-   steel sheet for pressure purposes (see EN 10028 all parts);
-   steel sheet for welded gas cylinders (see EN 10120);
-   quenched and tempered steels (see EN 10083-1 and EN 10083-2).

prEN 10111:2026 is a draft European Standard from CEN for continuously hot rolled low carbon steel sheet and strip for cold forming. It specifies the grades, chemical composition, mechanical properties, delivery conditions, testing, inspection, marking and packing for buyers, manufacturers and inspectors of these products.

What does prEN 10111:2026 specify?

prEN 10111:2026 covers continuously hot rolled low carbon steel sheet and strip in coils for cold forming. It applies to products with a thickness from 0,8 mm up to 25 mm, and it distinguishes strip by width as hot rolled wide strip or hot rolled slit wide strip.

The document is organized into clauses on scope, normative references, terms and definitions, classification and designation, purchaser information, requirements, tests, inspection documents, marking, packing, storage and transportation, disputes, and a bibliography. Clause 4 sets the grade system, Clause 6 states the product requirements, and Clause 7 gives the test rules.

What are the key requirements of prEN 10111:2026?

Grades, composition and delivery condition

prEN 10111:2026 classifies the steel into four grades: DD11, DD12, DD13 and DD14. The grades are defined by chemical composition, mechanical properties and forming behaviour, so the purchaser can choose a grade matched to the intended cold-forming severity.

Clause 6 requires DD11 to have deoxidation at the manufacturer’s discretion, while DD12 to DD14 shall be fully killed. Table 1 gives the allowable cast chemical composition and the mechanical property range for each grade. In practice, this means the order needs the right grade because the stronger forming grades also have tighter chemistry and different elongation levels.

Purchaser choices and delivery options

Clause 5 requires the purchaser to state the full designation, nominal dimensions, quantities, and any inspection document needed. It also lists optional agreements such as manufacturing route, skin-passed or descaled supply, trimmed edges, oiling, corrosion protection, rejection limits, test type and the intended application.

This matters because several product features are only available by agreement. If the product will be coated, welded, stored for a long time or used in a sensitive process, those details need to be stated at ordering time.

Mechanical properties, surface and coating

Clause 6 links the mechanical properties to Table 1 and states that the values apply for the period given in the table from the date the products are made available. The grades are arranged in increasing formability from DD11 to DD14.

The surface requirements allow only defects that do not impair use, while minor marks, pits, scratches, reel kinks and slight coloration are acceptable. Clause 6 also covers suitability for hot-dip-zinc, electrodeposition and other coatings, and states that standard welding processes are suitable, with the welding method and any special component requirements to be agreed when ordering. In practice, this tells the buyer whether the surface and joining behaviour fit the downstream process.

Dimensions, tests and inspection

Clause 6 refers tolerance on dimensions and shape to EN 10051. Clause 7 sets the test units by grade, requires sampling in line with EN ISO 377, and uses tensile testing to verify the mechanical properties according to EN ISO 6892-1.

If the manufacturer determines properties by calculation for specific inspection, the model shall follow EN 10373:2021, while disputes are settled using physical testing. Clause 8 allows inspection documents in accordance with EN 10204, and Clause 9 covers marking with the grade, heat number and supplier identification. Clauses 10 to 12 cover packing, dry storage and transportation, and disputes under EN 10021.

What terms does prEN 10111:2026 define?

  • Wide strip - hot rolled strip with a width of 600 mm or more.
  • Slit wide strip - hot rolled strip with a width below 600 mm.
  • Fully killed - the steel is fully deoxidized; this is required for DD12, DD13 and DD14.
  • Inspection document - the document type specified in EN 10204 for product verification.
  • Lower yield point (ReL) - the tensile value used when the steel shows a yield phenomenon.
  • 0.2 % proof strength (Rp0,2) - the tensile value used when no yield point phenomenon is observed.
  • Test unit - a quantity of products of the same grade and nominal thickness tested together.

Who uses prEN 10111:2026?

prEN 10111:2026 is used by steelmakers, coil processors, stockholders, purchasers and quality staff dealing with flat steel products for cold forming. It is also used by laboratories and inspection bodies carrying out tensile testing, sampling and document checks, and by fabricators who need material suitable for coating or welding.

What changed in prEN 10111:2026 from the previous edition?

prEN 10111:2026 will supersede EN 10111:2008.

Which standards are used with prEN 10111:2026?

  • EN 10021 - general technical delivery conditions and the basis for retests and disputes.
  • EN 10027-1 - steel names used in the symbolic designation.
  • EN 10027-2 - steel numbers used in the numerical designation.
  • EN 10051:2024 - tolerances on dimensions and shape.
  • EN 10079 - product terminology used for sheet and strip designation.
  • EN 10204 - types of inspection documents.
  • EN 10373:2021 - calculation model for mechanical properties when used for specific inspection.
  • EN ISO 377 - sampling and preparation of samples and test pieces.
  • EN ISO 6892-1 - tensile testing at room temperature.
  • EN 606 - cited for bar coding transport and handling labels when special marking is agreed.

What does the prEN 10111:2026 document contain?

Table 1 sets the grade-by-grade limits for chemical composition, tensile strength, elongation and the period of validity of the mechanical values. Table 2 gives the test unit sizes for DD11 to DD14. Clause 4 also gives designation examples, and Clause 7 gives the tensile specimen rules, including the formula used for thicker products.

The document also describes how to sample from coils, which tensile result to use when there is no yield point, and when chemical analysis may be agreed. In practical use, it gives the information needed to order, test, inspect, mark and handle continuously hot rolled low carbon steel sheet and strip for cold forming.
