Abstract

This European Standard specifies the grades of continuously hot rolled low carbon steel sheet and strip (in coils) for cold forming.
Depending on its actual width, strip is classified as:
-   hot rolled wide strip if its width is greater than or equal to 600 mm;
-   hot rolled slit wide strip if its width is less than 600 mm.
For each grade, it specifies the chemical composition and the mechanical properties.
This European Standard is applicable to products of thickness not less than 1,0 mm and not exceeding 11 mm.
This European Standard is not applicable to products covered by other standards, such as:
-   hot rolled products of non-alloy structural steels for general use (see EN 10025 all parts);
-   steel sheet for pressure purposes (see EN 10028 all parts);
-   steel sheet for welded gas cylinders (see EN 10120);
-   quenched and tempered steels (see EN 10083-1 and EN 10083-2).

prEN 10111 is a CEN draft European Standard for continuously hot rolled low carbon steel sheet and strip for cold forming. It specifies the grades, chemical composition, mechanical properties and technical delivery conditions for purchasers, steelmakers, processors and inspectors working with these products.

What does prEN 10111 specify?

prEN 10111 covers grades of continuously hot rolled low carbon steel sheet and strip, supplied in coils, for cold forming. It also sets the technical delivery conditions around chemistry, properties, testing, marking, packing, storage and dispute handling.

The document is organized into 12 clauses:

  • Scope
  • Normative references
  • Terms and definitions
  • Classification and designation
  • Information to be provided by the purchaser
  • Requirements
  • Tests
  • Inspection document
  • Marking
  • Packing
  • Storage and transportation
  • Disputes

Clause 1 states the product forms and the thickness range covered by the document, and it points readers away from products already covered by other standards such as EN 10025, EN 10028, EN 10120 and EN 10083 parts 1 and 2.

What are the key requirements of prEN 10111?

prEN 10111 is built around four grades, DD11, DD12, DD13 and DD14, with increasing formability from DD11 to DD14. In practice, the buyer selects the grade that matches the forming severity and the downstream process.

Classification and designation

Clause 4 says the purchaser chooses the steel grade and product type, and the product shall be designated with the product form, the standard number and the steel designation. The steel names follow EN 10027-1 and the steel numbers follow EN 10027-2. This matters because the order description must be precise enough for the mill to supply the right product.

Purchaser information

Clause 5 requires the purchaser to give the full designation, nominal dimensions, ordered quantities, any inspection document requirement, packing and marking needs, and limits on coil or bundle mass and size. Optional points can also be agreed, such as the manufacturing process, skin-passing, descaled supply, trimmed edges, oiling, corrosion protection, rejection percentage and the intended application. This is the part that prevents misunderstandings at order entry.

Chemical condition and delivery state

Clause 6.2 sets the deoxidation condition: DD11 is at the manufacturer’s discretion, while DD12, DD13 and DD14 are fully killed. Clause 6.4 describes delivery states such as as rolled, descaled, skin-passed, oiled or trimmed edges. In practice, these choices affect surface condition, corrosion risk and how easily the product can be processed later.

Mechanical properties, surface and weldability

Clause 6.5 links each grade to its mechanical properties and formability level. Clause 6.6 requires surfaces to be free from defects that would impair use, while allowing minor marks that do not cause failure or tooling damage. Clause 6.7 covers suitability for metallic or organic coating, and Clause 6.8 says the products are suitable for standard welding processes, with the welding method and any special component requirements to be stated at order time.

Dimensional accuracy and testing

Clause 6.9 points to EN 10051 for tolerances on dimensions and shape. Clause 7 sets the test scheme: test units depend on grade and thickness, sampling follows EN ISO 377, and tensile testing follows EN ISO 6892-1. Where properties are determined by calculation, the model shall follow EN 10373:2021, and disputes are resolved using physical test results.

What terms does prEN 10111 define?

prEN 10111 uses the definitions of EN 10079 for steel products, and several technical terms are central to reading the document.

  • Sheet - a flat steel product supplied as sheet rather than coil, used where formability and cut-to-size supply matter.
  • Strip - a hot rolled flat product supplied in coil, used for continuous processing.
  • Hot rolled wide strip - strip with a width of 600 mm or more, important for product classification.
  • Hot rolled slit wide strip - strip with a width below 600 mm, important because width changes the product description.
  • Fully killed - steel that has been fully deoxidized, used here for DD12, DD13 and DD14.
  • Skin-pass - a light rolling treatment that can be agreed at order time to adjust surface condition.
  • Lower yield point (R_eL) - the tensile property used when a yield phenomenon is present.
  • 0.2 % proof strength (R_p0,2) - the alternative tensile property used when no yield point is observed.

Who uses prEN 10111?

prEN 10111 is used by steel producers, service centres, buyers, quality managers and test laboratories. Producers use it to make and designate the product correctly, buyers use it to order the right grade and surface condition, and laboratories use it for sampling and tensile testing. It is also relevant to users who plan coating or welding operations, because those needs can be agreed at the time of enquiry and order.

What changed in prEN 10111 from the previous edition?

prEN 10111 supersedes EN 10111:2008.

Which standards are used with prEN 10111?

prEN 10111 relies on several referenced standards for supporting tasks:

  • EN ISO 377 - sample and test piece location and preparation for mechanical testing
  • EN ISO 6892-1 - tensile testing at room temperature
  • EN 10021 - general technical delivery conditions, including retests and disputes
  • EN 10027-1 - steel names
  • EN 10027-2 - steel numbers
  • EN 10051 - tolerances on dimensions and shape
  • EN 10079 - definitions of steel products
  • EN 10204 - types of inspection documents
  • EN 10373:2021 - calculation models for physical and mechanical properties

What does the prEN 10111 document contain?

prEN 10111 contains Table 1 with the grade data, including chemical composition limits, mechanical properties and validity period, and Table 2 with the test units by grade. Clause 7.5.1 gives the tensile test set-up, including specimen type and gauge-length rules for thinner and thicker products. Clause 7.5.2 points chemical analysis to the appropriate European or International standards.

The document also includes practical clauses on inspection documents, marking, packing, storage and transportation, so it can be used for ordering, receiving, testing and handling the steel in production and supply chains.
