SIST EN IEC 60730-2-15:2026 is a European Standard published by CENELEC for automatic electrical air flow, water flow and water level sensing controls. It specifies particular construction, operation and testing requirements for controls used in boilers, household and similar equipment, building automation and other listed applications, so manufacturers, test laboratories and specifiers can judge whether a control fits the intended use.

What does SIST EN IEC 60730-2-15:2026 specify?

SIST EN IEC 60730-2-15:2026 applies to automatic electrical air flow, water flow and water level sensing controls and uses Part 1 as its base, with additions and changes for these products. It covers controls for boilers, household and similar equipment, building automation, public-use equipment, smart enabled controls, and AC or DC powered controls within the stated voltage limits.

The scope also makes two practical points clear. First, the terms “equipment” and “controls” are used in a defined way throughout the document. Second, controls intended exclusively for industrial process applications are outside the normal scope unless another relevant standard explicitly includes them, and pressure sensing controls are covered elsewhere.

The document is organized as follows.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex HRequirements related to functional safety
Annex AAIndependently mounted controls for boiler applications
Annex BBRequirements for response delay
Annex CCIndependently mounted air flow and water flow sensing controls

Annex Q, Annex R, Annex S and Annex T give regional differences for CENELEC member countries, the United States of America, Japan and Canada.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN IEC 60730-2-15:2026?

SIST EN IEC 60730-2-15:2026 is mainly about declaring the control’s intended operating conditions, then proving that the control still works safely under those conditions, after endurance testing, and during EMC disturbance. The details are spread across Clauses 5, 9, 13 to 20, 25 and 26, with additional requirements in Annex H and the special annexes.

  • Clause 5 and Table 1 require the manufacturer to declare the information needed for testing and use, including temperature limits, maximum working pressure, response time or response delay where relevant, special environmental conditions, mounting details, levelling indication and the output condition after operation. In practice, this declaration defines how the control will be tested and how it can be selected for the appliance.
  • Clause 9 defines the action types and construction features that matter for safety. Manual reset boiler water level sensing controls must have a trip-free mechanism, response delay is required for type 1.AJ or 2.AJ action, and float-type controls that are affected by being out of level need a levelling indicator. That matters because the reset behavior and mounting position directly affect whether the control protects the equipment correctly.
  • Clause 13 and Annex H cover electronic fault assessment and functional safety. The manufacturer must declare whether the control is for permanent or non-permanent operation, the fault reaction time, and the frequency of the defined-state test function. For integrated or incorporated controls, some EMC-related outputs are judged as part of the appliance or equipment, not as a standalone device.
  • Clauses 14, 15, 16, 20 and 20.101 to 20.102 cover moisture, probe strength, heating and pressure strength. These clauses tie the test conditions to the declared maximum water temperature and working pressure, and they add immersion and hydrostatic strength checks where the control is exposed to water or boiler pressure. That matters for controls that sit directly in wet or pressurized service.
  • Clause 19 and Annex AA / Annex CC set endurance testing for the different control types. The annexes specify cycle counts and cycling rates for independently mounted boiler controls and independently mounted air and water flow controls, so endurance testing matches the way the control is actually used.
  • Annex BB controls response delay. If a response delay is declared, the annex sets the allowed deviation and drift by the method used to create that delay. In practice, this is the check that the delay stays predictable over time.
  • Clause 25 and Clause 26 cover EMC immunity and abnormal operation tests. For some cut-outs, limiters and operating controls, the post-test condition is judged against the declared output condition; for air and water flow sensing controls, some abnormal operation tests are not applicable. That keeps the EMC assessment aligned with the role of the control in the final system.

What terms does SIST EN IEC 60730-2-15:2026 define?

SIST EN IEC 60730-2-15:2026 defines several control types so that users can match the right product to the right function.

  • boiler water level cut-out - a float or electrode-sensor control for boiler applications that responds to low water level under abnormal conditions and has no user setting.
  • boiler water level limiter - a float or electrode-sensor control for boiler applications that keeps the water level below or above a set point during normal operation and may have user adjustment.
  • boiler water feed control - a float or electrode-sensor control that keeps boiler water above a set point and is used to cycle a feeder pump or feeder water valve.
  • water level protective control - a control that prevents a hazardous situation during abnormal operation by acting at one or more water levels.
  • water flow operating control - a control that senses or maintains water flow between two values during normal operation.
  • air flow cut-out - a control that responds to lack of air flow during abnormal operation and has no user setting.
  • response delay - a delay added to prevent unnecessary cycling when water level fluctuates.

The document also distinguishes permanent operation and non-permanent operation for functional safety assessment. Permanent operation means continuous monitoring for more than 24 h, while non-permanent operation means monitoring for less than 24 h.

Who uses SIST EN IEC 60730-2-15:2026?

SIST EN IEC 60730-2-15:2026 is used by manufacturers of automatic controls, appliance makers, boiler and HVAC equipment designers, and test laboratories. It is also relevant to certification bodies, quality managers and buyers who specify controls for pumps, chillers, dishwashers, washing machines, swimming pool equipment, ventilation and building automation systems.

the above table.
The language used for the development of this International Standard is English.
This document was drafted in accordance with ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2, and developed in
accordance with ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1 and ISO/IEC Directives, IEC Supplement, available
at www.iec.ch/members_experts/refdocs. The main document types developed by IEC are
described in greater detail at www.iec.ch/publications.
This part 2-15 is intended to be used in conjunction with IEC 60730-1. It was established on the
basis of the sixth edition of that standard (2022). Consideration may be given to future editions
of, or amendments to, IEC 60730-1.
This part 2-15 supplements or modifies the corresponding clauses in IEC 60730-1, so as to
convert that publication into the IEC standard: Particular requirements for automatic electrical
air flow, water flow and water level sensing controls.
Where this part 2-15 states "addition", "modification" or "replacement", the relevant require-
ment, test specification or explanatory matter in Part 1 should be adapted accordingly.
When a particular subclause of Part 1 is not mentioned in this Part 2, that subclause applies.
In the development of a fully international standard it has been necessary to take into
consideration the differing requirements resulting from practical experience in various parts of
the world and to recognize the variation in national electrical systems and wiring rules.
The reader's attention is drawn to the fact that Annex Q, Annex R, Annex S, and Annex T list
all of the "in-some-country" clauses on differing practices of a less permanent nature relating
to the subject of this document.
In this publication, the following print types are used:
– requirements proper: in roman type;
– test specifications: in italic type;
– explanatory matter: in smaller roman type.
– Defined terms: bold type.
Subclauses, notes or items which are additional to those in Part 1 are numbered starting from
101, additional annexes are lettered AA, BB, etc.
A list of all parts of the IEC 60730 series, under the general title: Automatic electrical controls,
can be found on the IEC website.

with equipment safety.
IEC 60730-2-15:2026 © IEC 2026
This document specifies the requirements for construction, operation and testing of automatic
electrical air flow, water flow and water level sensing controls used in, on, or in association with
an equipment.
This document takes into account the response value of an automatic action of a control where
such a response value is dependent upon the method of mounting the control. Where a
response value is of significant purpose for the protection of the user, or surroundings, the
value defined in the appropriate household equipment standard or as determined by the
manufacturer applies.
This document does not
– apply to air flow, water flow and water level sensing controls intended exclusively for
industrial process applications unless explicitly mentioned in the relevant part 2 or the
equipment standard. However, this document can be applied to evaluate air flow, water flow
and water level sensing controls intended specifically for industrial applications in cases
where no relevant safety standard exists;
– address the integrity of the output signal to the network devices, such as interoperability
with other devices unless it has been evaluated as part of the control system;
– apply to pressure sensing controls, the requirements for which are contained in
IEC 60730-2-6.
