LPG equipment and accessories - Equipping of LPG road tankers

This document specifies equipment and accessories for road tankers used for the transport of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and identifies the equipment that is considered necessary to ensure that filling, transportation and discharge operations can be carried out safely. It specifies the requirements for the assembly of the accessories and the vehicle LPG equipment to the road tanker. This document also identifies additional equipment and accessories that can be used on road tankers carrying LPG.
This document does not preclude the use of alternative designs, materials and equipment testing which provide the same or a higher level of safety. ADR [9] requires that such alternative technical codes be recognized by the competent authority, provided that the minimum requirements of section 6.8.2 of ADR [9] are complied with.
This document does not apply to “tank-containers” or “battery-vehicles” used for the transport of LPG.

Overview

EN 12252:2022/prA1 (CEN) specifies the equipment and accessories for LPG road tankers, defining the items considered necessary to ensure safe filling, transportation and discharge of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). The amendment A1 updates normative references and clarifies pipework requirements. The standard covers assembly requirements for vehicle LPG equipment and identifies optional additional accessories that may be fitted to improve safety or operational capability. It does not apply to tank-containers or battery-vehicles.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and purpose: Defines necessary and additional equipment and accessories for road tankers carrying LPG, and sets assembly requirements for mounting and integration of LPG systems.
  • Safety focus: Ensures safe operations during filling, transport and discharge; allows alternative designs or materials provided equal or higher safety is demonstrated and authorities accept them (see ADR section 6.8.2).
  • Pipework update (Clause 9.1.6): Pipework must meet EN 16125:2019 requirements (Tables 3–5). The amendment restricts pipework diameters: compression-joint pipework kept to a minimum, and the maximum diameter for other pipework materials must not exceed DN 10.
  • Normative references: EN 16125:2019 is added as a normative reference for liquid and vapour phase LPG pipework systems and supports.
  • Assembly and integration: Specifies requirements for the correct assembly of accessories and vehicle-mounted LPG equipment to the road tanker to maintain operational safety and compliance.

Practical applications and who uses this standard

  • Vehicle manufacturers and tank builder engineers - for designing and assembling LPG road tankers to meet European safety expectations.
  • Fleet operators and LPG transport companies - to understand mandatory and recommended fittings to ensure safe operations.
  • Equipment and accessory suppliers - to select and certify products (valves, pipework, fittings, supports) suitable for LPG road tanker use.
  • Safety engineers, inspectors and regulatory authorities - for conformity assessment, inspection and enforcement referencing EN 12252 and ADR requirements.
  • Design consultants and maintenance teams - to guide retrofit, repair and routine checks of tanker LPG systems.

Related standards and references

  • EN 12252:2022 (base standard) - original requirements for equipping LPG road tankers.
  • EN 16125:2019 - LPG pipework systems and supports (liquid and vapour phase); referenced and required by the A1 amendment.
  • ADR (European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road), section 6.8.2 - governs recognition of alternative technical codes and equivalence of safety levels.

This standard is essential for anyone involved in the design, manufacture, operation or inspection of LPG road tankers seeking compliance with modern European safety practices. Keywords: LPG road tankers, EN 12252:2022/prA1, LPG equipment, pipework, EN 16125, tanker safety, ADR compliance.
