ISO/TC 228/WG 1 - Diving services

This document specifies requirements for service providers with regard to responsible practices for the provision of their services. This document applies, but is not limited, to recreational-diving-related activities, for example: — scuba diving; — snorkelling; — free diving (breath hold diving). Further, this document provides guidance to all stakeholders involved in recreational-diving-related activities on best practice to minimize negative impact on the aquatic environment and to optimize positive outcomes. NOTE In this document the term "aquatic" refers to all bodies of water. This document helps stakeholders to identify and compare service providers who follow environmental best practice.

This document specifies requirements for training programmes designed to educate participants in environmental awareness and sustainable environmental practices in recreational diving activities. The training programmes consist of theory and an optional practical training segment water session.

ISO 24803:2017 specifies requirements for service providers in the field of recreational scuba diving and snorkelling excursions. It specifies the following areas of service provision: - introductory diving activities; - snorkelling excursions; - provision of training and education; - organized and guided diving for qualified divers; - rental of diving and snorkelling equipment. Service providers can offer one or more of these services. ISO 24803:2017 specifies the nature and quality of the services to the client. ISO 24803:2017 does not apply to freediving (also called "apnea diving").

ISO 11121:2017 specifies minimum programme content requirements for training organizations for introductory scuba experiences in recreational scuba diving. Under no conditions are these requirements considered to be a standard for the training and qualification of scuba divers. ISO 11121:2017 applies to programmes that include participants being taken into an open water environment. It does not apply to programmes that are exclusively conducted in a confined water environment (e.g. swimming pools). ISO 11121:2017 also specifies the conditions under which this service is to be provided, which supplement the general requirements for recreational diving services specified in ISO 24803.

ISO 24801-1:2014 specifies the competencies required of a scuba diver in order to obtain a scuba diver qualification from a training organization attesting that he/she has met or exceeded scuba diver level 1 ("Supervised diver"), and specifies evaluation criteria for these competencies. It also specifies the conditions under which training is provided, in addition to the general requirements for recreational diving service provision in accordance with ISO 24803. ISO 24801-1:2014 applies to training and evaluation in recreational scuba diving.

ISO 24802-2:2014 specifies the competencies required of a scuba instructor in order to obtain a scuba instructor qualification from a training organization attesting that he/she has met or exceeded scuba instructor level 2, and specifies evaluation criteria for these competencies. It also specifies the conditions under which training is provided, in addition to the general requirements for recreational diving service provision in accordance with ISO 24803. ISO 24802-2:2014 applies to training and evaluation in recreational scuba diving.

ISO 24801-2:2014 specifies the competencies required of a scuba diver in order to obtain a scuba diver qualification from a training organization attesting that he/she has met or exceeded scuba diver level 2 ("Autonomous diver"), and specifies evaluation criteria for these competencies. It also specifies the conditions under which training is provided, in addition to the general requirements for recreational diving service provision in accordance with ISO 24803. ISO 24801-2:2014 applies to training and evaluation in recreational scuba diving.

ISO 24802-1:2014 specifies the competencies required of a scuba instructor in order to obtain a scuba instructor qualification from a training organization attesting that he/she has met or exceeded scuba instructor level 1, and specifies evaluation criteria for these competencies. It also specifies the conditions under which training is provided, in addition to the general requirements for recreational diving service provision in accordance with ISO 24803. ISO 24802-1:2014 applies to training and evaluation in recreational scuba diving.

ISO 24801-3:2014 specifies the competencies required of a scuba diver in order to obtain a scuba diver qualification from a training organization attesting that he/she has met or exceeded scuba diver level 3 ("Dive leader"), and specifies evaluation criteria for these competencies. It also specifies the conditions under which training is provided, in addition to the general requirements for recreational diving service provision in accordance with ISO 24803. ISO 24801-3:2014 applies to training and evaluation in recreational scuba diving.

ISO 13293:2012 specifies requirements for gas blender training programmes and the competencies required of an individual in order to obtain a gas blender certificate from a training organization, attesting that he/she has met or exceeded the requirements specified in ISO 13293:2012. ISO 13293:2012 specifies two levels of gas blender qualification, as follows: Level 1 gas blender; Level 2 gas blender. ISO 13293:2012 recognizes that a training programme can be organized and delivered in a modular way.

ISO 13970:2011 specifies requirements for snorkelling guide training programmes and the criteria to be met that permit a training organization to award a snorkelling guide qualification indicating that the requirements specified in ISO 13970:2011 have been met. ISO 13970:2011 also specifies the particular conditions under which the training is provided, in addition to the general requirements for recreational diving service provision specified in ISO 24803.

ISO 13289:2011 specifies minimum requirements for service providers offering supervised recreational snorkelling excursions. ISO 13289:2011 applies to activities that will include participants being taken into an open water environment. It does not apply to activities that are exclusively conducted in a confined water environment, e.g. pools. ISO 13289:2011 also specifies particular conditions under which the service is provided, in addition to the general requirements for recreational diving service provision specified in ISO 24803.

ISO 11107:2009 specifies the level of competence required of a scuba diver in order to be awarded an enriched air nitrox (EAN) diver certification by a training organization. ISO 11107:2009 also specifies the conditions under which training is to be provided, which supplement the general requirements for recreational diving services specified in ISO 24803.

ISO 11121:2009 specifies minimum requirements for training organizations that offer introductory scuba experience training programmes to non-divers. ISO 11121:2009 applies to programmes that include participants being taken into an open water environment. It does not apply to programmes that are exclusively conducted in a confined water environment (e.g. swimming pools). ISO 11121:2009 also specifies the conditions under which this service is to be provided, which supplement the general requirements for recreational diving services specified in ISO 24803.

ISO 24802-2:2007 specifies the competencies that a scuba instructor has to have achieved in order for a training organization to award the scuba instructor certification indicating that he has met or exceeded scuba instructor level 2 and specifies assessment of these competencies. It also specifies conditions under which training has to be provided, in addition to the general requirements for recreational diving service provision in accordance with ISO 24803. ISO 24802-2:2007 applies only to contractual training and certification in recreational scuba diving.

It also specifies conditions under which training has to be provided, in addition to the general requirements for recreational diving service provision in accordance with ISO 24803. ISO 24802-1:2007 applies only to contractual training and certification in recreational scuba diving.

ISO 24803:2007 specifies requirements for service providers in the field of recreational scuba diving. It specifies three areas of service provision: training and education, organized and guided diving for certified divers, rental of diving equipment. Service providers may offer one or more of these services. ISO 24803:2007 specifies the nature and quality of the services to the client and applies only to contractual provision of those services.
