Overview
EN ISO 12543-2:2021 - "Glass in building - Laminated glass and laminated safety glass - Part 2: Laminated safety glass" specifies performance requirements for laminated safety glass used in buildings. Adopted by CEN in December 2021, this standard defines how laminated safety glass must perform under impact and durability tests and how it is assessed for appearance, dimensions and acoustic properties. It aligns with the ISO 12543 series and cross‑references test methods in ISO 12543-4.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and definitions
- Applies to laminated safety glass as defined in ISO 12543-1. Defects found in installed products are handled by ISO 12543-6.
- Impact resistance
- Classification is based on performance in pendulum impact tests; two pendulum methods are referenced (see ISO 29584). Applicable test method may depend on national regulations.
- Durability tests
- High‑temperature tests: short and long procedures are specified (see ISO 12543-4 clauses). Manufacturers may choose the long test; a successful long test also satisfies the short test requirement.
- Humidity test: requirements and acceptance criteria reference ISO 12543-4; no faults (bubbles, delamination, haze/cloudiness) allowed in specified specimens.
- Radiation test: irradiated specimens must not change light transmittance by more than ±0.03 (if initial transmittance > 0.65) or ±0.02 (if ≤ 0.65); visually, no faults permitted.
- Fire‑resistant laminated safety glass
- Durability provisions specific to fire‑resistant laminates are included (see Clause 6).
- Component parts, dimensions and edge finishing
- Requirements on component materials and finishing are referenced, with details in ISO 12543‑5.
- Acoustic properties and appearance
- Test and evaluation provisions for acoustic performance and visual appearance are specified or referenced (ISO 12543‑4, ISO 12543‑6).
- Designation
- Rules for product designation and labelling are included to support consistent specification and compliance.
Practical applications and users
Who uses EN ISO 12543-2:2021
- Glass manufacturers and laminators establishing product performance and quality assurance
- Architectural specifiers, façade engineers and consultants writing performance‑based glass specifications
- Test laboratories and certification bodies performing pendulum, temperature, humidity and radiation tests (per ISO 12543-4 and ISO 29584)
- Fabricators, installers and building owners assessing suitability for balustrades, doors, skylights, curtain walls and other safety glazing applications
- Regulators and compliance officers referencing harmonized European requirements
Why it matters
- Ensures consistent safety and durability for laminated safety glass in buildings
- Provides objective test criteria for impact resistance, environmental durability and optical stability
- Supports product labelling and cross‑border harmonization under CEN/ISO agreements

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. Details of
any patent rights identified during the development of the document will be in the Introduction and/or
