prEN ISO 16119-2 is a CEN draft European standard for agricultural and forestry machinery. It specifies environmental requirements and verification methods for horizontal boom sprayers, with the aim of reducing the risk of environmental contamination during use, including foreseeable misuse. It is intended for manufacturers, test labs, buyers, and specifiers who need to check whether a sprayer design meets the environmental performance expectations for this machine type.
What does prEN ISO 16119-2 specify?
prEN ISO 16119-2 specifies design and performance requirements for horizontal boom sprayers and the means used to verify them. It focuses on features that affect filling, emptying, spraying, cleaning, drift, and control, because these are the points where product losses and contamination can occur in practice.
The document applies to horizontal boom sprayers as defined in Clause 3. It does not apply to human-mounted horizontal boom sprayers, and it does not cover safety aspects, which are handled by EN ISO 4254-6. The standard is meant to be used together with EN ISO 16119-1, which provides the general requirements common to all sprayer types in the ISO 16119 series. Where this part differs from Part 1, this part takes precedence for machines within its scope.
The document is arranged into:
- Clause 1 Scope
- Clause 2 Normative references
- Clause 3 Terms and definitions
- Clause 4 Requirements
- Clause 5 Verification
- Clause 6 Marking
- Clause 7 Operator’s manual
- Informative Annex ZA on the relationship with Regulation (EU) 2023/1230
- Bibliography
What are the key requirements of prEN ISO 16119-2?
prEN ISO 16119-2 concentrates on the parts of a sprayer that most affect environmental losses: the tank, pump, boom, nozzles, filters, cleaning systems, and control systems. In practice, the standard asks the manufacturer to design the machine so that liquid is contained, measured, distributed, and cleaned up with predictable performance.
Spray tank, filling, emptying, and mixing
Clause 4.1.1 requires tank surfaces to be smooth enough for cleaning, and filling arrangements to prevent liquid returning to the supply and to reduce spillage during filling. The tank must also have enough extra volume above nominal capacity, depending on the filling connection size or the presence of an automatic shut-off valve. For the user, this means the tank should be sized and equipped so that overfilling is less likely and filling operations are easier to manage.
Clause 4.1.1 also requires strainers in the filling opening, controlled filling capacity, and a means for introducing chemical products. Residual liquid after emptying is limited, and the tank must be able to empty cleanly while avoiding contamination of the machine or operator. The tank content indicator, including a digital indicator if used, has to be readable from the driving and filling positions and stay within specified tolerances. Mixing performance is also controlled so that concentration in the tank remains even enough for consistent spraying.
Pump, lines, and boom layout
Clause 4.1.2 requires the pump to provide enough flow for the sprayer’s intended operating range and to keep pressure pulsations within a defined limit. Clause 4.1.3 requires hoses and pipes to be installed without harmful deformation, with quick-acting shut-off devices on pressure lines and pressure ratings that match the circuit. In practice, these requirements help maintain stable application and reduce the risk of hose failure or uneven delivery.
Clause 4.1.4 sets requirements for spray boom section widths, nozzle spacing, boom height adjustment, and response to obstacles. Booms must be able to move out of the way without damage when they contact field obstacles, and larger booms must return automatically to their original position. This matters because boom position directly affects dose uniformity and mechanical durability in field conditions.
Nozzles, filters, and measuring systems
Clause 4.1.5 covers filters on the suction and pressure sides, including access for cleaning with limited spillage. Clause 4.1.6 covers nozzle fixation, drip control after spraying stops, protection of end nozzles on wider booms, and nozzle flow rate tolerance. Clause 4.1.7 requires working pressure, application rate, control setting, and tank contents to be readable from the operator position, and sets accuracy limits for pressure indicators and other measuring systems.
For users and testers, these requirements mean the sprayer must not only deliver liquid, but also show the operator the right information and keep each nozzle close to its intended flow. That is important for dose accuracy, drift control, and repeatable operation.
Volume/hectare adjustment and drift control
Clause 4.2 requires the volume/hectare adjustment system to react consistently when operating conditions change, such as boom sections being switched on or off or travel speed changing. It also limits deviation and variation during repeated adjustment tests. Clause 4.3 requires the sprayer to be designed to reduce drift as far as practicable and to be adjustable so that drift performance meets the stated reference level.
In practice, this section is about keeping the applied dose stable over the field and limiting off-target movement of spray. That is especially important for environmental protection and for meeting the machine’s declared spray performance.
Cleaning, container cleaning, and special sprayer types
Clause 4.4 requires a rinse water tank for most machines, internal cleaning, and an external cleaning connection. It also sets a residue-concentration reduction target after cleaning. Clause 4.5 covers plant protection product container cleaning devices and the transfer of rinse water to the spray tank without spillage. For the user, these requirements reduce leftover product in the machine and help make rinsing safer and more controlled.
Clauses 4.6 and 4.7 add requirements for band sprayers, spray guns, and lances. Clause 4.8 covers module-based sprayers and requires the minimum and maximum system limits to be defined so the modules can be tested as part of a complete field spray system.
What terms does prEN ISO 16119-2 define?
- Horizontal boom sprayer - A machine that applies plant protection products through a boom or in bands, with spray generally directed downward onto or into the target.
- Module - A stand-alone device that is not a sprayer by itself, but becomes one when combined with compatible modules.
- Full spray boom recirculation - A hydraulic arrangement that keeps spray mixture circulating through all boom pipes, even when the nozzles are switched off.
- Semi (ring-line) spray boom recirculation - A hydraulic arrangement that keeps spray mixture circulating through the boom pipes except the end-section segments when section valves are off.
Who uses prEN ISO 16119-2?
prEN ISO 16119-2 is used by sprayer manufacturers, component suppliers, test laboratories, certification bodies, and buyers who specify horizontal boom sprayers. It is also relevant to quality managers and compliance teams who need to check design claims, set up verification tests, or prepare technical documentation.
In practice, it is used for product design, prototype testing, conformity assessment, procurement specifications, and preparing the operator’s manual. It is especially useful where environmental performance, residue control, drift reduction, and measurable application accuracy must be documented.

The indication of contents shall correspond to ISO 9357. It shall be durable and easily readable from the
driver's position and from where the tank is filled. Turning of the head and the upper body is acceptable.
The acceptable tolerances of the indication are
— ±15 % for each graduation mark/read-out value for volumes up to 10 % of the nominal tank volume,
— ±7,5 % for each graduation mark/read-out value for volumes from 10 % to 20 % of the nominal tank
volume, and
— ±5 % for each graduation mark/read-out value for volumes above 20 % of the nominal tank volume.
The tolerances shall be measured with a maximum error on measurement of ±1 % with the sprayer in a
horizontal position.
A digital tank level indicator can be used as an alternative to mechanical tank level indicator. The
requirements for indication of contents and tolerances are the same as specified for mechanical tank level
indicators. A nominal tank volume shall be indicated permanently on the tank.
4.1.1.5 Mixing
Tanks shall be designed (e.g. including agitators) to ensure an even concentration of mixture. The maximum
deviation of tank and spraying concentrations, as specified and measured in accordance with ISO 5682-4,
shall not exceed ±15 %.
4.1.2 Pump
The capacity of the pump shall be suited to the needs of the sprayer. The pump shall have sufficient flow
rate capacity to be able to spray within the operating limits specified in the sprayer operator’s manual and
maintaining an even concentration of mixture at level required in 4.1.1.5. The flow rate of pump shall be
measured according to ISO 12908:2020 7.3.2.1. and specified in the operator’s manual (7).
The pump (including air chamber if present) shall not cause pulsations that exceed 5 % of the working
pressure.
Pulsations shall be checked with the nominal rotation speed of the pump, at the location of the sprayer’s
pressure indicator and with the intended working pressure.
4.1.3 Lines (hoses and pipes)
The bending radius of hoses shall be within the limits recommended by the hose manufacturer. Hoses shall
not have any deformation which could disturb the liquid flow.
Pressure lines shall be equipped with quick-acting shut-off devices (e.g. tip-over lever valves).
The maximum working pressure of hoses and the maximum working pressure of connecting devices shall
be at least equal to the maximum working pressure of the circuit. See also EN ISO 16119-1:20xx, Clause 6 e).
