Overview

EN 4500-004:2024 - "Aerospace series - Metallic materials - Rules for drafting and presentation of material standards - Part 004: Specific rules for titanium and titanium alloys" is a CEN/ASD‑STAN standard that defines how European aerospace material standards for titanium and titanium alloys must be drafted and presented. Published August 2024 (approved 17 June 2024), it supersedes the 2012 edition and is part of the EN 4500 series that governs consistent formatting, terminology and specification content for metallic materials used in aerospace applications.

Key topics and technical requirements

This document provides the specific rules that supplement the general drafting rules in EN 4500‑001 so that standards for titanium products are clear, consistent and fit for aerospace use. Major technical topics covered include:

  • Title and scope conventions for titanium material standards (how to name and qualify products).
  • Method of melting terminology and options (e.g., non‑consumable vacuum melting, consumable electrode vacuum arc melted, plasma cold hearth melted, electron‑beam melted, multiple melted).
  • Form entries and qualifiers for semi‑finished products (sheets, strips, plates, bars, sections, tubes, wires, forgings, castings, rings) and permitted production qualifiers (rolled, extruded, drawn, seamless, welded, forged, hipped, investment cast).
  • Chemical composition presentation rules (order of elements: alloying, gas, trace, ratios/totals).
  • Table 1 structure and line‑by‑line guidance used across aerospace metallic material standards (material designation, composition, melting method, form, production method, limit dimensions, technical specification, delivery and use conditions, test samples, mechanical tests such as tensile, hardness, shear, bending, impact, creep, marking and dimensional inspections).
  • Annexes that illustrate completion of title pages, introductions, scope, and Table 1 examples (informative aids for standards authors).

The standard references EN 4259 (terms), EN 4500‑001 (general rules) and EN 4800‑001 (titanium technical specification - plates, sheets and strips).

Practical applications

EN 4500‑004:2024 is not a product specification; it defines how product specifications for titanium and titanium alloys must be written for aerospace. Practical uses include:

  • Ensuring clear, uniform material standards for supplier contracts and procurement.
  • Guiding standards writers and national bodies when creating or updating titanium alloy EN standards.
  • Helping material engineers, quality managers and certification bodies interpret and compare titanium material requirements across documents.
  • Supporting manufacturers and testing laboratories to set up consistent inspection and reporting formats aligned with aerospace practice.

Who should use this standard

  • Standards authors and technical committees
  • Aerospace material engineers and specification writers
  • Procurement and quality assurance teams in aerospace OEMs and suppliers
  • Metallurgists, testing labs and certification authorities

Related standards

  • EN 4500‑001 (General rules)
  • EN 4500 series parts (002, 003, 005, 006)
