Overview
EN 12629-2:2002+A1:2010 is the CEN safety standard for block making machines used in the manufacture of constructional products from concrete and calcium‑silicate (blocks, kerbs, paving stones and similar). It is a Part 2 (machine‑specific) standard that works together with EN 12629‑1 (common requirements). The document sets out additional requirements and deviations specific to block making machines and covers hazards from the point the mixture enters the machine until green products are removed to the curing system.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & interfaces
- Applies to the machine assembly from mixture entry to product removal to the curing system; interfaces with other installation components are addressed via Part 1.
- Hazard identification
- Deals with significant hazards reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer: mechanical (crushing, shearing, cutting, entanglement), electrical, vibration, high‑pressure systems, and slip/trip/fall risks.
- Hazard zones & guarding
- Informative annexes define mechanical hazard zones and typical machine terminology to support design of guards, interlocks and protective measures.
- Safety measures
- Specifies additional protective measures and deviations from EN 12629‑1 (e.g., guarding, control functions, tamper and pallet board safety, tamper cleaning devices) and requires design per EN ISO 12100 principles.
- Vibration management
- Requires machine siting on a concrete foundation or equivalent to control vibration transmitted to the environment and personnel.
- Verification
- Verification of safety measures can be performed by inspection, calculation or testing; documentation, marking and user information requirements are included.
- Compliance context
- Includes an informative Annex ZA linking the standard to the essential requirements of EU Directive 2006/42/EC (Machinery Directive). An amendment addresses noise controls and test code (noted in the standard).
Practical applications
- Use this standard to:
- Design and manufacture safe block making machines and associated equipment.
- Perform machine risk assessments, select guarding and interlocks, and define safe maintenance procedures.
- Prepare technical documentation to demonstrate conformity with the Machinery Directive for CE marking.
- Define installation requirements (foundations, interfaces) and commissioning checks.
Who should use this standard
- Machine manufacturers and designers in the precast concrete industry
- Safety engineers, risk assessors and compliance officers
- Plant owners, installers and maintenance teams
- Notified bodies and regulatory authorities reviewing conformity
