Overview
EN 3043:2008 is a CEN aerospace technical specification for externally threaded fasteners manufactured from heat‑resisting steel FE‑PA92HT (A286). It sets material, mechanical and quality assurance requirements for parts in the tensile strength class 900 MPa at room temperature, with a maximum material test temperature of 650 °C. The standard applies primarily to aerospace applications when referenced on the product standard or drawing and permits either machining from bar or forging (manufacturer’s choice) as the manufacturing method.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Material and classification
- Fasteners must be produced from FE‑PA92HT (A286) meeting the specified 900 MPa class and 650 °C test limit.
- Materials supplied should conform to related material standards (e.g., EN 2398, EN 2399, EN 3639).
- Manufacturing methods
- Parts may be machined from bar or forged; if forged, no grain‑flow control is required.
- Forging temperature limit: ≤ 1 150 °C with air cooling.
- Heat treatment
- Solution treatment example: 980 °C ± 15 °C for 1 h, quench in oil or water.
- Precipitation (age) treatment: 710–730 °C, hold ≥ 16 h (± allowed tolerance), then air cool.
- Surface and finishing
- Removal of scale/contamination by approved abrasive blasting and grinding of shank and bearing surfaces where necessary.
- Optional cold fillet rolling to remove machining evidence (with distortion limits described).
- Inspection, testing and sampling
- Acceptance tests and sampling plans are defined (see tables for production acceptance, tensile loads, defect classification).
- Non‑destructive testing (e.g., penetrant inspection) and dimensional/thread gauging are required where applicable.
- Quality assurance
- Manufacturer responsibility for inspection and test reports; quality system certification per ISO 9001 and EN 3039 is referenced.
Applications and users
- Intended for aerospace and high‑temperature fastening applications where A286 (FE‑PA92HT) fasteners are specified on drawings or product standards.
- Typical users:
- Aerospace fastener manufacturers and forgers
- Design and stress engineers specifying high‑temperature fasteners
- Quality, inspection and procurement teams enforcing production acceptance and certification
- Supply chain stakeholders ensuring conformity to CEN requirements

4 Certification and quality assurance
The allocation of tests corresponding to the requirements of this standard is as follows.
4.1 Acceptance
4.1.1 Purpose
The purpose of acceptance tests is to check, as simply as possible, by a method representative of actual use
conditions, with the uncertainty inherant to statistical sampling, that the bolts constituting the batch satisfy the
requirements of this standard.
4.1.2 Conditions
Acceptance tests are summarised in Table 2. They shall be performed on each batch. Table 1 specifies the
test method and sampling plan to be used for each test. Bolts from the batch to be tested shall be selected by
simple random sampling.
Each bolt may be submitted to several tests.
The bolts to be subjected to destructive tests may be those on which non-destructive tests have been
performed.
4.2 Quality system certification
4.2.1 Purpose
The purpose of quality system certification is to ensure that the manufacturer has demonstrated the
acceptability of his quality system and his ability for continuing production of parts according to this standard,
to the required level of quality.
4.2.2 Requirements and procedure
The requirements and procedures for quality system certification shall be according to the requirements of
ISO 9001 and EN 3039.
4.3 Responsibility for inspection and tests
The manufacturer is responsible for the performance of all inspection and test requirements as specified
herein. Each manufacturer will use their own or exceptionally, any other facilities approved in accordance with
4.2 for the implementation of these inspection and test requirements.
4.4 Inspection and test report
A test report showing actual numerical values shall be provided at the purchaser's option as part of the terms
of the purchase order.
