Overview
EN 1263-2:2014 is a CEN European Standard that sets safety requirements for the positioning limits of safety nets used as temporary works equipment on construction sites. It complements EN 1263-1 (which covers product safety requirements and test methods) by specifying how system S, T, U and V safety nets must be positioned, linked and anchored to ensure effective fall protection. Small system S nets below 35 m² or with the shortest side under 5.0 m are excluded from this part and are subject to national rules.
Key Topics
- Instruction manual requirements: Each consignment must include user instructions (in the user’s language) with minimum information on required anchorage forces, maximum fall height, minimum catching width, linkage methods, minimum distance below the net, storage, inspection and replacement.
- Fall height limits: Maximum permissible fall height into a safety net is 6.0 m from the working level (nominal fall height from the person’s centre of gravity may be up to 7.0 m). Within 2 m of the net border the reduced fall height Hr must not exceed 3.0 m.
- Catching width (horizontal projection): Minimum catching widths depend on fall height:
- He ≤ 1.0 m → b ≥ 2.0 m
- He ≤ 3.0 m → b ≥ 2.5 m
- He ≤ 6.0 m → b ≥ 3.0 m
For working areas inclined over 20°, b ≥ 3.0 m and the vertical separation t ≤ 3.0 m.
- System-specific positioning and linkage:
- System S: minimum net size 35 m² (shortest side ≥ 5.0 m); anchorage spacing < 2.5 m; design anchorage force P ≥ 6 kN at 45°; overlap min 2.0 m when used.
- System T: linkage overlap min 0.75 m; support frames must be positioned so falling persons don’t impact the frame.
- System U: positioning limits referenced to EN 13374.
- System V: upper edge located ≥ 1.0 m above working level; overlapping not permitted; top support spacing ≤ 5.0 m; lower edge anchor spacing ≤ 0.50 m; anchorage ≥ 0.1 m from building edge.
- Deformation limits: Maximum net deformation under test conditions is defined (applies when f0 ≤ 0.1·l and Hi = h + f0 ≤ 6.0 m).
Applications
EN 1263-2 is used by:
- Contractors and site safety managers to plan net placement and fall-protection layouts.
- Temporary works designers and structural engineers to size anchorage and support frameworks.
- Safety-net manufacturers to provide compliant instruction manuals and product specifications.
- Test laboratories and certifying bodies verifying net installations and performance.
- Regulators and auditors assessing on-site compliance with European positioning limits.
