Overview
EN 1793-2:2018 - published by CEN - specifies a laboratory acoustic test method to determine the intrinsic airborne sound insulation of road traffic noise reducing devices under diffuse (reverberant) sound field conditions. It is intended for products that can be assembled inside test facilities compliant with EN ISO 10140-2 / EN ISO 10140-4 (e.g., barriers, cladding, covers used in tunnels, deep trenches or partially covered roads). This standard measures product performance in reverberant conditions and is not for assessing insertion loss or devices installed in non-reverberant roadside situations.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test environment: Laboratory reverberant/diffuse sound field as described in EN ISO 10140 series. Reverberant conditions are defined by the geometric envelope (examples: tunnels, deep trenches, partial covers).
- Measurement range: One‑third octave band sound reduction indices Ri from 100 Hz to 5 kHz.
- Specimen mounting:
- Sample windowed area ≥ 9.5 m² (excluding levelling plinth).
- Edge supports must not overlap the sample by more than 70 mm and must be sealed to prevent leakage.
- Where posts are used, at least one post must be included and panels attached on both sides; panels on the traffic-facing side must be at least 2 m long.
- Single-number rating (DLR): A single-number airborne sound insulation rating DLR is derived by weighting the Ri values with the normalized traffic noise spectrum from EN 1793-3. DLR is reported as an A‑weighted level difference and rounded to the nearest integer. Informative categories have been removed - only numeric DLR values are reported.
- Measurement uncertainty: Declaration of measurement uncertainty (coverage probability 95%) is mandatory following ISO/IEC Guide 98-3 (GUM). Annex C provides guidance.
- Test report: Must include reference to EN 1793-2, lab ID, test date, full specimen description (drawings/photos, masses, seals), test conditions, Ri frequency data (table and graph), DLR, uncertainty and signature.
Applications
- Laboratory qualification of noise barriers, cladding panels, road covers and other road traffic noise reducing devices intended for reverberant installations (tunnels, trenches, covered roads).
- Product comparison and selection by manufacturers, acoustic consultants, road authorities and procurement teams when intrinsic airborne insulation performance under diffuse-field conditions is required.
- Input for design decisions where airborne transmission through a device (rather than diffraction over it) is a critical factor.
Who should use this standard
- Acoustic test laboratories (EN ISO 10140 facilities)
- Noise barrier and road-cover manufacturers
- Road and tunnel design engineers, consultants and specifiers
- Certification bodies and product assessment organizations

The article discusses EN 1793-2:2018, which is a test method for determining the acoustic performance of road traffic noise reducing devices. The method focuses on measuring the airborne sound insulation performance in reverberant conditions. It specifically evaluates the intrinsic performance of barriers that can be assembled in a testing facility described in EN ISO 10140-2 and EN ISO 10140-4. It is important to note that this method is not suitable for determining the intrinsic characteristics of noise reducing devices to be installed on roads in non-reverberant conditions.
