Overview

EN 13981-2:2004 is a CEN European standard that defines technical conditions for inspection and delivery of aluminium plates and sheets used in structural railway applications. It covers rolled products that contribute to the structural performance of railcar bodyshells and other major structural components. The standard sets out requirements for material selection, qualification, quality control, dimensional tolerances, traceability and guidance for application (including welding and fatigue design).

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and product types: Applies to rolled aluminium products (plate and sheet) intended for structural railway use.
  • Alloys and tempers: Lists approved alloys (EN AW-5454, 5754, 5083, 6061, 6082) and requires tempers to conform to EN 485-2 / EN 515. Other alloys or tempers must be mutually qualified.
  • Chemical limits: Includes specific limits such as maximum Pb (lead) of 0.01% for 6xxx series alloys (as specified).
  • Mechanical properties: Tensile strength, yield strength and elongation must meet EN 485-2 unless otherwise agreed.
  • Surface quality and dimensional tolerances: Surface requirements per EN 485-1; tolerances per EN 485-3 and EN 485-4.
  • Quality assurance: Manufacturer must maintain a quality management system at least equivalent to EN ISO 9001 and perform required inspections before shipment.
  • Traceability and marking: Full traceability for materials, heat treatments and tests; lot marking on packaging (alloy, temper, thickness, lot number, manufacturer).
  • Inspection documentation: Default inspection certificate is EN 10204 type 3.1.B including chemical and mechanical test results.
  • Record keeping and packaging: Quality records retained (minimum 10 years) and packaging to follow EN 485-1.
  • Application guidance: Annex A provides practical guidance on alloy selection, fatigue design references (e.g., Eurocode 9, ERAAS) and welding recommendations (see EN 1011-4).

Practical applications

  • Use EN 13981-2:2004 when specifying aluminium plate and sheet for: railcar bodies, structural panels, floor assemblies and other load-bearing railway components.
  • Provides a contract-ready basis for procurement, supplier qualification, production control and acceptance testing.
  • Guides designers and engineers on alloy selection, joining (welding) precautions and fatigue considerations for long-life rail service.

Who should use this standard

  • Railway OEMs and integrators specifying aluminium structural components
  • Material and mechanical engineers designing railcar structures
  • Purchasing and quality assurance teams evaluating suppliers
  • Aluminium sheet/plate manufacturers and processors
  • Welding specialists and fatigue analysts working on rail applications
