prEN ISO 16119-3 is a CEN draft standard for agricultural and forestry machinery that sets environmental requirements for sprayers for bush and tree crops. It specifies design and performance measures to reduce the risk of environmental contamination during use, including foreseeable misuse, and it also covers sprayer identification and the minimum content of the instruction handbook. Engineers, quality managers, test labs, and buyers use it for sprayers used in agriculture, horticulture, forestry, and similar crops where application is mainly sideways and/or upwards.

What does prEN ISO 16119-3 specify?

prEN ISO 16119-3 applies to sprayers for bush and tree crops and similar crops, except human-mounted sprayers. It focuses on environmental performance and does not cover safety aspects, which are addressed by EN ISO 4254-6. The document is arranged into Scope, Normative references, Terms and definitions, Requirements, Verification, Marking, and Operator’s manual, with Annex ZA linking the European Standard to Regulation (EU) 2023/1230.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex ZARelationship between this European Standard and the essential requirements of Regulation (EU) 2023/1230

What are the key requirements of prEN ISO 16119-3?

Spray tank, filling, emptying and mixing

prEN ISO 16119-3 sets requirements for the tank so that filling, draining and mixing limit spillage and residue. The tank surfaces, filling arrangement, strainer, contents indication, and mixing performance all have specific limits and verification methods in Clause 4. In practice, this means the tank must be easy to fill without return flow, readable from the operating position, and able to empty and mix reliably.

The tank must leave only limited residual liquid after emptying, and the emptying device must allow the tank to drain completely in a horizontal position. The filling arrangement also has to prevent leakage, allow safe transfer of chemical products, and provide enough extra volume above nominal capacity to avoid overfilling. This matters because it reduces spill risk during filling and rinse-down.

Pumps, lines, filters, nozzles and controls

prEN ISO 16119-3 requires the pump to match the sprayer’s operating needs and to avoid excessive pulsation. Hoses and pipes must suit the working pressure, and pressure lines need quick-acting shut-off devices. Filters must be sized for the nozzles fitted and arranged so the operator can detect blockages and clean them without unnecessary spillage.

Nozzles must be fixed in the correct position, protected against crop contact, and arranged symmetrically left and right. After spraying is stopped, dripping is tightly limited, and each nozzle’s output must stay within the allowed deviation from the manufacturer’s flow tables. In practice, this is about keeping the spray pattern consistent and preventing losses when the machine is switched off.

Application rate, air flow, drift and cleaning

The document sets requirements for the volume/hectare adjustment system so the application rate remains stable after changes in operating conditions. It also requires the pressure drop between the pressure indicator and the nozzle to stay within limits, and it calls for calibration aids with the sprayer. For air-assisted machines, fan output and left-right symmetry are controlled, and the design must support drift reduction.

Cleaning is a major part of the standard. Sprayers need a rinse water tank, an internal cleaning system, and a way to connect external cleaning devices, with residue concentration reduced after cleaning. If container cleaning devices are fitted, they must leave very little residue and allow rinsing water to be transferred without environmental contamination. The operator’s manual must explain crop adjustment, fan setting to reduce drift, symmetrical application where relevant, pump flow rate, and drift reduction settings.

Clause 5 says the requirements are verified by visual inspection, measurement, or functional testing, as summarized in the verification table. That gives manufacturers and test houses a direct route from requirement to test method.

What terms does prEN ISO 16119-3 define?

  • Sprayer for bush and tree crops - a machine for applying plant protection products to crops such as grapes, fruits or hops, usually by directing spray sideways and/or upwards.
  • Volume/hectare adjustment system - the system that sets and maintains the application rate per area as operating conditions change.
  • Total residual - the liquid remaining in the tank after emptying, used to judge how well the sprayer can be drained.
  • Nominal tank volume - the stated tank capacity used as the reference for filling, residual and cleaning requirements.
  • Drift - spray loss away from the target area, which the design must reduce as far as practicable.
  • Pressure indicator - the gauge or digital display used to show working pressure to the operator.
  • Plant protection product container cleaning devices - devices that rinse empty product containers and transfer the rinse liquid back without spillage.

Who uses prEN ISO 16119-3?

Manufacturers of orchard, vineyard, hop and forestry sprayers use prEN ISO 16119-3 when designing tanks, pumps, nozzles, cleaning systems and operator controls. Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies use it to plan verification and type testing. Buyers, specifiers and quality managers use it to compare sprayers against a clear environmental-performance baseline for bush and tree crop application.

Which standards are used with prEN ISO 16119-3?

  • EN ISO 16119-1 - provides the common environmental requirements for all sprayer types covered by the series.
  • EN ISO 4254-6 - supplies the safety-related requirements and some referenced features such as pressure indicators and chemical product introduction.
  • ISO 5681 - gives the common vocabulary for crop protection equipment.
  • ISO 5682-1, ISO 5682-2, ISO 5682-3, ISO 5682-4 - provide the test methods for nozzle output, transverse distribution, volume/area adjustment systems and tank agitation.
  • ISO 9357, ISO 13440, ISO 16236 - support requirements for tank volume, residual volume and drainable volume concentration.
  • ISO 9898, ISO 12809, ISO 22866 - support tests for air-assisted sprayers, pump performance and field measurement of spray drift.
  • ISO 21278-1 and ISO 21278-2 - cover container cleaning devices and their performance requirements.
  • ISO 22368-1 - gives the internal cleaning test method for complete sprayers.
  • ISO 4102 and EN ISO 21920-3 - support connection threading and surface roughness measurement.

What does the prEN ISO 16119-3 document contain?

Clause 4 contains the technical requirements for the tank, pump, lines, filters, nozzles, measuring systems, flow adjustment, liquid and air distribution, cleaning, container cleaning devices, and spray guns and lances. The document also includes a verification clause that maps each requirement to visual inspection, measurement or functional testing.

The tables give the size-dependent tank filling margin, the minimum strainer depth, pressure-indicator accuracy, and the verification summary. Figure 1 explains how to measure strainer depth and gap width. These parts are used for design checks, test plans, and conformity assessment. Annex ZA then connects the technical clauses to Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 for European market use.
