Fire resistance tests for non-loadbearing elements - Part 3: Curtain walling - Full configuration (complete assembly)

Overview
prEN 1364-3 (CEN) specifies a standardized method to determine the fire resistance of curtain walling systems. The procedure evaluates the performance of a complete non-loadbearing curtain wall assembly tested with a heated area of 3 m × 3 m. The standard is intended to be read and used in conjunction with EN 1363-1, and where applicable EN 1363-2 for external fire exposure curves.
This document covers assemblies designed to provide fire resistance and excludes curtain walls incorporating non-fire resistant glazing. Tests of individual components of a curtain wall (for example linear seals, panels or glazing) are covered under part 4 of the series.
Key practical points: test area 3 m × 3 m, internal or external exposure options, use with EN 1363-1, and classification of the complete assembly.
Key Topics
Scope and applicability
- Non-loadbearing curtain walls intended to provide fire resistance.
- Not applicable where glazing is non-fire resistant.
Test specimen and dimensions
- Heated area for classification: 3 m × 3 m.
- Extensions: specimens shall extend at least 500 mm beyond supporting simulated floors and sides of the test frame unless reduced for external exposure.
- Restraint: specimen fixed at top and bottom of simulated floor construction; one vertical edge unrestrained, the other fixed and sealed as in practice.
Supporting constructions and verification
- Standard simulated floor: reinforced concrete, minimum 150 mm thickness, 500 mm width, density approx. 2000 ± 500 kg/m3.
- Standard simulated wall: minimum 150 mm thickness, 500 mm width, non-combustible material with minimum density 1200 kg/m3.
- Test frame rigidity requirement: internal dimension increase shall not exceed 5 mm under 25 kN expansion force.
Instrumentation and measurement
- Thermocouples and plate thermometers positioned per EN 1363-1 requirements and the specimen layouts in this part.
- Mean and maximum temperature measurement arrangements for exposed and unexposed faces are prescribed.
Safety and conditioning
- Fire testing may produce toxic gases and other hazards; risk assessment, safety instructions and training are required.
- Specimen conditioning follows EN 1363-1.
Applications
- Assessment and classification of curtain wall fire performance for building design, regulatory compliance and product development.
- Evaluating whole-system behavior where interactions between panels, glazing, seals, mullions and fixings are critical to fire resistance.
- Supporting manufacturer declarations and third-party certification when full-assembly evidence is required.
Related Standards
- EN 1363-1: General fire resistance test requirements (mandatory companion standard).
- EN 1363-2: Alternative and additional procedures, including external fire exposure curves.
- EN 1364-4: Tests on individual curtain wall elements (panels, seals, glazing) as referenced for component assessment.
This summary highlights the practical value of prEN 1364-3 for designers, test laboratories, manufacturers and authorities engaged in curtain wall fire performance evaluation.
