Overview
EN 14513:2005 specifies requirements for the design, manufacture and testing of bursting disc pressure relief devices used on transportable gas cylinders. The standard is applicable to a range of gas cylinder applications but explicitly excludes acetylene cylinders. It requires conformity with EN ISO 4126-2 and provides additional, cylinder-specific provisions where this document takes precedence.
This standard does not determine when a bursting disc device shall be fitted or how to size a device; those aspects are addressed in related documents (for example EN 13096).
Key Topics
- Scope and applicability: Devices for transportable gas cylinders; acetylene excluded.
- Standards relationship: Devices shall conform to EN ISO 4126-2:2003; EN 14513:2005 requirements override in case of conflict.
- Design temperatures: Default specified minimum and maximum temperatures are -40 °C and +65 °C respectively, unless otherwise specified. The default coincident temperature is +15 °C unless the purchase order specifies otherwise.
- Assembly and configuration:
- Only a single bursting disc is permitted per device assembly.
- Assemblies are normally fitted to the cylinder valve and must not be overstressed during normal operation or fitting.
- Holder design must prevent ejection of material or contents if overstress occurs during fitting.
- Materials and compatibility:
- Metallic materials shall follow EN ISO 11114-1; non-metallic materials shall follow EN ISO 11114-2 (and EN ISO 11114-3 as relevant).
- Corrosion resistance and oxygen compatibility are required for relevant gases; copper alloys require careful selection due to stress corrosion cracking risk.
- Testing and production:
- Pressure and burst tests per EN ISO 4126-2.
- Test media: clean water or air for hydraulic tests; oil-free air or inert gas (e.g. nitrogen) for pneumatic tests.
- Coatings that resist corrosion must have coating integrity demonstrated prior to pressure testing.
- Cleanliness, marking and packaging:
- Parts must be cleaned for intended service (EN 12300 as guidance).
- Tamper-evident seals and marking of the document number and burst pressure are required on the disc or holder.
- Packaging must include manufacturer, model, size, material and batch identity.
Applications
EN 14513:2005 is intended for manufacturers, valve suppliers, cylinder fillers and safety engineers who specify or supply bursting disc pressure relief devices for transportable gas cylinders used in industrial, medical, welding and specialty gas applications (excluding acetylene). The standard ensures consistent over‑pressure protection, material compatibility and traceability for cylinder fittings.
