Overview

EN 16811-2:2016 (CEN) - "Winter service equipment and products - De-icing agents - Part 2: Calcium chloride and Magnesium chloride - Requirements and test methods" defines essential requirements and test methods for calcium chloride and magnesium chloride used as de-icing agents for road winter maintenance. The standard covers both solid products and aqueous solutions as delivered to customers, and is intended to provide clear product specifications for procurement, quality control and safe use.

Key topics and technical requirements

The standard organizes requirements and test methods across several technical areas, including:

  • Chemical requirements for calcium chloride and magnesium chloride in solid and liquid form (composition and limits).
  • Sieve analysis and particle-size requirements for solids to ensure suitable spreading characteristics.
  • General physical properties such as bulk density (loose) and solution density for application and handling.
  • Analytical test methods: specified methods include complexometric titration for calcium and magnesium, chloride determinations, sulfate, total organic carbon (TOC), hydrocarbons, pH measurement, heavy metals, and instrumental methods (ICP-OES, AAS, GC) referenced in normative clauses.
  • Sampling procedures for bulk and packaged shipments (Annex B) to ensure representative laboratory testing.
  • Packaging, marking and documentation requirements, including Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and product descriptions (Annex A).
  • Requirements for blends of calcium/magnesium chloride with sodium chloride and/or potassium chloride, covering both solid and liquid blends.

These sections align testing and specification needs with practical use cases (spreading, spraying, storage).

Applications and users

EN 16811-2:2016 is primarily used by:

  • Road authorities and municipal winter maintenance departments specifying de-icing materials for tenders and contracts.
  • Manufacturers and suppliers of calcium chloride and magnesium chloride products to demonstrate compliance and provide appropriate product data and MSDS.
  • Test laboratories performing conformity testing, sampling and analytics for procurement acceptance.
  • Contractors and equipment operators selecting products for spreading or spraying based on particle size, solution concentration and handling properties.
  • Environmental and safety officers assessing contaminants (hydrocarbons, heavy metals, TOC) and labelling requirements.

Keywords: EN 16811-2:2016, de-icing agents, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, winter maintenance, test methods, sieve analysis, bulk density, MSDS.
