Overview

EN 12348:2000/prA1 is a European standard developed by CEN Technical Committee CEN/TC 151, focusing on the safety requirements for core drilling machines on stands. This amendment, submitted in 2008, updates and modifies the original EN 12348:2000 to enhance safety measures, clarify terms, and incorporate evolving regulations for construction equipment used primarily in concrete core drilling.

The standard addresses essential safety principles in design, operation, control, and maintenance of core drilling machinery mounted on stands, ensuring protection against hazards such as mechanical parts, electrical risks, noise, and vibration exposure. It supports EU directives related to machinery safety and harmonizes safety protocols across member states.

Key Topics

  • Safety Requirements and Measures
Updates extend to transmission parts, feeding mechanisms, and stability criteria for core drilling machines on stands. The standard mandates guards in compliance with EN 953 and EN ISO 12100-2 to prevent operator exposure to moving parts. It also requires machines with powered feed systems to be self-sustaining in any stop-position to avoid sudden movement risks.

  • Control Devices and Emergency Stop
Enhanced specifications include requirements for accessible emergency stop devices, particularly for machines with remote or automatic controls, aligning with EN ISO 13850:2008. Cable-less controls must include automatic stops on signal loss to ensure operational safety.

  • Vibration and Noise Management
The amendment introduces Clause 5.11 focused on hand-arm vibration reduction, emphasizing design-stage minimization. It prescribes vibration measurement, declaration, and verification according to Annex D, promoting operator health and compliance with ergonomic standards. Noise reduction techniques at the design stage are also detailed per EN ISO 11688-2:2000.

  • Stability Considerations
Detailed provisions on machine stability encompass operating conditions, as well as transportation, assembly, and dismantling phases. Operator manuals must provide clear instructions to avoid handling instability and related safety risks.

  • Information for Use and Marking
The standard expands marking requirements to include the manufacturer’s full business name and address and specific machine designations. Instructions must offer comprehensive guidance on transport, installation, operation, maintenance, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and warnings about potential hazards such as exhaust gas accumulation and blocked components.

  • Normative References and Terminology Updates
Updated references align with latest standards like EN ISO 12100-1 & -2 (basic safety concepts), EN ISO 13849-1 (safety control systems), and revised electrical and vibration standards, ensuring consistency and regulatory compliance.

Applications

EN 12348:2000/prA1 applies primarily to core drilling machines installed on stands used in construction and building industries, particularly for concrete drilling tasks. The standard is highly relevant for:

  • Manufacturers and Designers developing core drilling machines to meet European safety regulations
  • Safety Engineers and Inspectors tasked with ensuring compliance in construction sites
  • Operators and Maintenance Personnel who require clear instructions and safeguards to minimize injury risks
  • Regulatory Bodies enforcing harmonized safety requirements for machinery used across EU and EFTA countries

By following this standard, stakeholders contribute to minimizing occupational hazards, improving machine reliability, and ensuring safer working environments in drilling applications.

Related Standards

EN 12348:2000/prA1 cross-references multiple international and European standards including:

  • EN ISO 12100-1 & 2: Basic concepts and design principles for machine safety
  • EN 953: Safety guarding of machinery
  • EN ISO 13849-1: Safety-related parts of control systems – design principles
  • EN ISO 13850: Emergency stop design and implementation
  • EN ISO 11688-2: Noise reduction at the design stage
  • EN ISO 13732-1: Ergonomics of thermal environments – Hot surfaces
  • EN ISO 5349-2: Vibration measurement and evaluation
  • EN 60204-1: Electrical equipment safety for machines
  • prEN 61029-2-6: Safety requirements for diamond drills

These interconnected standards ensure comprehensive coverage of safety considerations from mechanical to electrical and ergonomic aspects for core drilling machine applications.

By adhering to EN 12348:2000/prA1, companies benefit from adherence to the latest European safety amendments for core drilling machines on stands, aiding regulatory compliance and operator protection in the construction sector.
