Overview

EN 572-6:2012 is a European Standard published by CEN that specifies the dimensional and minimum quality requirements for wired patterned glass used in building construction. This standard focuses on basic soda lime silicate wired patterned glass products supplied in rectangular panes and stock sizes, ensuring consistent optical and visual quality by defining allowable faults and tolerances. It supersedes the earlier EN 572-6:2004 and introduces updated measurement methods, including a new squareness determination process.

The standard is part of the EN 572 series covering various types of soda lime silicate glass products and is applicable throughout Europe with mandatory implementation by national standards bodies of CEN member countries.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
EN 572-6:2012 applies exclusively to wired patterned glass panes delivered in specific rectangular stock sizes (length from 1,380 mm to 4,500 mm and width from 1,500 mm to 2,520 mm). For sizes outside these ranges, EN 572-8 provides additional guidance.

  • Dimensional Requirements

    • Thickness tolerances range between ±0.6 mm to +1.5/-1.0 mm depending on nominal thickness (6 to 9 mm).
    • Length and width have a ±5 mm tolerance with specified squareness limits based on pane size.
    • The embedded wire mesh must have square steel meshes of either approximately 12.5 mm or 25.0 mm dimensions, made from wire at least 0.42 mm in diameter.
  • Quality and Visual Faults
The standard classifies visual faults into:

    • Spot faults: Spherical, quasi-spherical, and elongated spots with size and concentration limits.
    • Linear/extended faults: Marks, scratches, or deposits allowed at low frequency (average 0.05 faults per 20 m²).
    • Pattern faults: Deviations such as out of square, waviness, and bow with a maximum pattern deviation of 12 mm per meter.
    • Wire faults: Wire mesh deviations including out of square, waviness, bow, plus rules for wire penetration and breaks, with a wire deviation tolerance up to 15 mm per meter. Penetration is not permitted; wire breaks are only acceptable if not visually disturbing.
  • Measurement Methods
Visual faults are inspected with the glass pane positioned vertically 3 meters from a matt grey screen under diffuse daylight conditions, viewed from 1.5 meters directly normal to the surface. Thickness is measured using a calibrated plate gauge.

  • Designation System
Products are labeled including mesh size, reference to EN 572-6, tint or clarity, pattern reference, nominal thickness, and pane dimensions, for clear identification and conformity verification.

Applications

EN 572-6:2012 wired patterned glass is widely used in building construction where safety and fire resistance are important, such as:

  • Interior and exterior safety glazing
  • Fire-resistant partitions and doors
  • Facades where visual aesthetics and structural integrity are critical
  • Industrial and commercial buildings requiring wire-reinforced glass for added mechanical strength
  • Renovation and replacement glazing using standardized stock sizes for efficient procurement

This standardized wired patterned glass ensures uniform quality, reliable mechanical performance, and controlled optical properties-critical in achieving compliance with building codes and enhancing occupant safety.
