Overview
EN 15254-7:2018 - Extended application of results from fire resistance tests - Non-loadbearing ceilings - Part 7: Metal sandwich panel construction (CEN) defines rules and guidance for extending fire test results for internal non-loadbearing ceilings made from self‑supporting, double‑skin metal faced sandwich panels (as per EN 14509). It explains how results from an EN 1364-2 ceiling fire test can be applied to variations in materials, geometry and fixing systems to support a fire classification under EN 13501-2.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and assumptions: Applies to factory made metal sandwich panels with an insulating core bonded to both facings. Assumptions include one‑side fire exposure, limited support structure deflection, and use of EN 1993‑1‑2 rules for steel strength at elevated temperature.
- Field of extended application: Differentiates direct field of application (identical conditions) from extended application (predicted performance for variations using rules and calculations).
- Material and construction variations: Rules cover changes in metal facings, adhesives and core materials, panel thickness, span length, joint design, boundary conditions and fixing systems. Example: small changes in sheet thickness may be permitted (table shows an allowed variation of ±0.2 mm of tested thickness).
- Interaction and limits: Guidance on how factor influences interact (e.g., core type vs. insulation performance) and when additional testing is required.
- Calculations and measurements: Clause 6 and Annex C provide calculation methods for extending span length, evaluating catenary forces and allowable spans under elevated temperatures; additional measurements to record in the reference test are specified.
- Annexes: Informative annexes include typical fire behaviour of sandwich panel ceilings, example end fixings, and normative calculation rules for span extension and catenary forces.
Practical applications
- Use EN 15254-7:2018 to:
- Assess whether a tested sandwich panel ceiling can be specified for different panel lengths, thicknesses or fixation layouts without repeat full-scale testing.
- Produce extended application reports for product certification, tender documentation or compliance demonstration.
- Support risk-based specification decisions for ceilings in commercial, industrial and public buildings where non‑loadbearing fire-rated ceilings are required.
Who should use this standard
- Manufacturers of metal sandwich panels and adhesive systems
- Fire engineers and laboratories conducting EN 1364-2 tests and extended application analyses
- Certifiers and approval bodies producing classification documents under EN 13501-2
- Specifiers / architects / installers who need to confirm compliance when changing panel design, span or fixing details

Extended application is a prediction of the expected fire resistance of fire resistant metal faced sandwich panels. It may be based on interpolation between or extrapolation from test data. The fundamental consideration shall be that the fire resistant metal faced sandwich panels after extension would achieve the required fire performance if it were to be tested according to EN 1364-2. The extended application of test results from metal faced sandwich panels used as a non-loadbearing ceiling shall be based on the reference fire test results performed according to EN 1364-2 and may be complemented by one or more additional tests. The general rules in EN 15725 shall be followed. SIST EN 15254-7:2018
« s r % for a new coating compared to the tested one is thus allowed if there is at least a 10 % margin in the insulation test result compared to the I-classification. Test results are always valid for coatings with higher emissivity values compared to the tested one. When a change in coating is made, the manufacturer of the coated sheet shall provide emissivity properties for the products. A non-coated metal sheet can have an emissivity as low as 0,1. A change from a coated to a non-coated sheet is therefore not allowed. The same rule specified above for coatings applies also in this case. A decrease in emissivity of 10 % is allowed if the emissivities of the different sheets are known. The energy content of
