Advanced technical ceramics - Ceramics composites - Methods of test for reinforcement - Part 2: Determination of linear density

This part of EN 1007 specifies a method for the determination of the linear density (mass per unit length) of ceramic fibres, including silicon carbide, silicon nitride, silicon carbon-nitride, alumino-silicate, alumina or silicon oxide fibres. The linear density is determined on unsized ceramic yarn.

Overview

EN 1007-2:2002 is a European standard developed by CEN that defines the method for determining the linear density of advanced technical ceramic reinforcement fibres. This standard applies to ceramic multifilament tows including silicon carbide, silicon nitride, silicon carbonitride, alumino-silicate, alumina, and silicon oxide fibres. Linear density, expressed in tex (grams per 1,000 meters), is a critical parameter reflecting the mass per unit length of ceramic yarn, providing essential information for quality control and material characterization in ceramics manufacturing.

This test method is specifically designed for unsized ceramic yarns, ensuring accuracy in measurements without interference from surface coatings. EN 1007-2:2002 supports industries that rely on ceramic composites by standardizing how reinforcement fibre linear density measurements are conducted, thus enabling better material consistency and comparability across suppliers and applications.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability: Applicable to ceramic fibrous materials such as silicon carbide, silicon nitride, alumina, and more; excludes carbon fibres which are covered by ISO 1889.
  • Sample Preparation: Detailed protocols for sampling (in accordance with EN ISO 1886), cutting test specimens under precise tension, and drying procedures.
  • Testing Conditions: Specifies environmental conditions-23 ± 2°C temperature and 50 ± 5% relative humidity-to ensure reproducibility and comparability.
  • Test Apparatus: Includes accurate cutting devices, sensitive balances (0.1 mg accuracy), ovens for drying at 105 ± 5°C, desiccators, and other accessories.
  • Measurement Process: Weigh precisely measured lengths of multifilament tow to calculate linear density using a standard formula:
    t (tex) = (mass in grams × 1000) / length in meters
  • Reporting: Mandates comprehensive test reports including material description, batch number, specimen details, test conditions, results, and referencing EN 1007-2.

Applications

The determination of linear density in ceramic reinforcement fibres is vital for:

  • Ceramic Composite Manufacturing: Ensures composite materials meet design specifications for strength, weight, and performance.
  • Quality Control: Allows manufacturers to verify fibre consistency between different batches and suppliers.
  • Material Research and Development: Supports development of new ceramic fibre types by providing standardized measurement techniques.
  • Supply Chain Communication: Provides a reliable, repeatable basis for communication of fibre properties between producers and end-users.
  • Performance Prediction: Accurate linear density data aids in modeling mechanical properties and processing behaviour of ceramic composites.

By adhering to EN 1007-2:2002, manufacturers and laboratories can achieve more reliable material characterization that supports high-performance applications in aerospace, automotive, electronics, and other advanced technical fields utilizing ceramic composites.

Related Standards

  • EN 1007 Series:
    • Part 1: Determination of size content of ceramic fibres
    • Part 3: Determination of filament diameter and cross-section area
