This European Standard specifies  requirements for construction and  performance of sprinklers which are  operated by a change of state of an element  or bursting of a glass bulb under the  influence of heat, for use in automatic  sprinkler systems. Test methods and a  recommended test schedule for type  approval testing are also given.

Overview

EN 12259-1:1999 + A1:2001/A3:2006 is the CEN European Standard for sprinkler components used in fixed firefighting systems. The amendment A3 (approved 22 December 2005) updates test and measurement requirements and is published in the three official CEN languages. The standard supports conformity with EU directives and is implemented by national standards bodies across CEN member states.

This part of EN 12259 focuses on the design, performance and test protocols for sprinklers, with a normative Annex B that defines the test to determine operating temperatures for glass-bulb and fusible-link sprinklers.

  • Temperature control and ramp: the test prescribes controlled heating from ambient to an intermediate hold point, followed by a slow increase in temperature until operation or up to a small margin above the upper operating limit. The Annex gives exact ramp rates, hold times and acceptance criteria.
  • Any rupture of a glass bulb within the prescribed temperature range is treated as operation; partial releases require additional functional testing.
