Overview

EN 12259-1:1999 + A1:2001/A3:2006 is the CEN European Standard for sprinkler components used in fixed firefighting systems. The amendment A3 (approved 22 December 2005) updates test and measurement requirements and is published in the three official CEN languages. The standard supports conformity with EU directives and is implemented by national standards bodies across CEN member states.

This part of EN 12259 focuses on the design, performance and test protocols for sprinklers, with a normative Annex B that defines the test to determine operating temperatures for glass-bulb and fusible-link sprinklers.

Key Topics

  • Scope and status: EN 12259-1 as amended (A1/A3) is to be adopted by CEN members and used to harmonize sprinkler component requirements.
  • Annex B - Operating-temperature test (normative):
    • Test sample size: 30 glass-bulb sprinklers or 30 fusible-element sprinklers are tested per Annex B.
    • Laboratory temperature measuring device: required accuracy ±0.25% of nominal rating; calibrated for 40 mm immersion. A PT100 sensor conforming to EN 60751 (or equivalent) is specified to control the thermal bath.
    • Sensor and sprinkler alignment: the thermally sensitive element must be level with the centre of the sprinkler operating part (glass bulb or fusible element).
    • Immersion and placement: sprinklers must be fully covered by the liquid (minimum 5 mm cover); the geometric centre of the bulb or fusible element shall be not less than 35 mm below the liquid surface (preferred (40 ± 5) mm).
    • Temperature control and ramp: the test prescribes controlled heating from ambient to an intermediate hold point, followed by a slow increase in temperature until operation or up to a small margin above the upper operating limit. The Annex gives exact ramp rates, hold times and acceptance criteria.
    • Any rupture of a glass bulb within the prescribed temperature range is treated as operation; partial releases require additional functional testing.

Applications

  • Use by manufacturers to verify sprinkler operating temperatures and functional reliability before market placement.
  • Reference for test labs performing liquid-bath operating-temperature tests for glass-bulb and fusible-link sprinklers.
  • Guidance for specifiers, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) and fire protection engineers when assessing component conformity and performance.

Related Standards

  • EN 60751 (mentioned) for PT100 sensor specification and calibration practices.
  • Other parts of EN 12259 (components for sprinkler and water spray systems) which cover additional components and system-level requirements.

Keywords: fixed firefighting systems, sprinklers, glass-bulb sprinkler, fusible-link sprinkler, operating-temperature test, liquid-bath test, PT100, CEN, EN 12259-1.

For implementation and exact procedural parameters refer to the official EN 12259-1:1999+A1:2001/A3:2006 text and normative Annex B for precise ramp rates, hold times and acceptance criteria.
