(Main)Agricultural and forestry machinery - Environmental requirements for sprayers - Part 4: Fixed and semi-mobile sprayers (ISO/DIS 16119-4:2026)
- Abstract
This part of ISO 16119 specifies requirements and the means for their verification for the design and performance of fixed and semi-mobile sprayers, as defined in 3.1 and 3.2, with regard to minimizing the potential risk of environmental contamination during use, including misuse foreseeable by the manufacturer.
This type of spraying system is generally a combination of separate elements (main tank, pump and application unit) that can be assembled in fixed installations (fixed sprayers) or with moving parts (semi-mobile sprayers).
It does not apply to application equipment for space/spatial treatments.
It is intended to be used with ISO 16119 1, which gives general requirements common to all the sprayer types covered by ISO 16119. When requirements of this part of ISO 16119 are different from those stated in ISO 16119 1, the requirements of this part of ISO 16119 take precedence over the requirements of ISO 16119 1 for machines within the scope of this part of ISO 16119. This part of ISO 16119 does not cover safety aspects (see ISO 4254 6).

prEN ISO 16119-4 is a CEN standard for the environmental requirements of fixed and semi-mobile sprayers used in agriculture and forestry. It specifies design, performance and verification requirements that reduce the risk of environmental contamination during use, including foreseeable misuse by the manufacturer.
What does prEN ISO 16119-4 specify?
prEN ISO 16119-4 covers fixed and semi-mobile sprayers made up of separate elements such as the main tank, pump and application unit. It sets requirements for how these sprayers are built, how they perform, how they are checked, and what information the operator must receive.
The scope excludes application equipment for space or spatial treatments, including sprayers with thermal droplet production and foggers. The document is intended to be used together with ISO 16119-1, which provides the general requirements common to all sprayer types; where the two parts differ, this part takes precedence for machines within its scope. The introduction also identifies it as a type C standard, so its provisions override type A or B standards for machines designed to it.
The document is organized into:
- Clause 4 - requirements
- Clause 5 - verification
- Clause 6 - marking
- Clause 7 - operator’s manual
- Annex A - normative verification of pump pulsations
- Annex ZA - informative relationship to Regulation (EU) 2023/1230
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Verification of pump pulsations |
| Annex ZA | Relationship with the essential requirements of Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 |
What are the key requirements of prEN ISO 16119-4?
prEN ISO 16119-4 focuses on environmental protection at the points where liquid can leak, be overfilled, be misapplied, or remain as residue. The most important requirements are concentrated in Clause 4, with Annex A providing a dedicated pump test.
Pump/tank unit requirements
Clause 4.1 requires the pump/tank unit to be free of static leaks when the tank is filled to nominal capacity. The remaining liquid after emptying is limited by tank volume, so the standard controls how much product can stay inside the system after use.
The spray tank surface finish is also controlled. Inner walls must have limited roughness, and for semi-mobile sprayers this applies to the outer walls as well. In practice, this helps cleaning and reduces the risk that product or residue will cling to rough surfaces.
Filling design is a major topic in 4.1.3. Filling arrangements must prevent return flow to the supply, avoid splashing and spillage, and use strainers with a small mesh and limited gap around the filling opening. Fixed sprayers and semi-mobile sprayers have different filling provisions, and fixed sprayers with an automatic shut-off valve need a digital tank level sensor. That matters because overfilling prevention is tied to how the tank level is measured and how filling stops.
The tank emptying device must allow complete drainage in a horizontal position, with no visible puddles after 5 minutes. Clause 4.1.3 also requires a guarded outlet so the liquid can be collected without contaminating the environment or exposing the operator.
The tank contents indicator must be readable from the filling position and accurate within stated tolerances. If an automatic shut-off valve is used to prevent overfilling, a digital tank level indicator is mandatory. The mixing requirement in 4.1.3.5 controls how evenly the mixture is kept in the tank, because uneven concentration can lead to under- or over-application.
Pump, dosing and application unit
Clause 4.1.4 requires the pump capacity to match the sprayer’s operating limits, and the pump flow rate must be measured according to ISO 12809:2020. The pump and any air chamber must not create pulsations above 5 % of working pressure, which matters because pressure swings affect dose accuracy and nozzle output. Annex A gives the test arrangement for checking those pulsations.
Clause 4.2 covers dose and volume adjustment. Pressure adjustment devices must keep working pressure stable, and after switching the application unit or sections off and on, pressure has to return close to its original value. Direct injection systems, when fitted, must prevent backflow, be cleanable where clogging can occur, and keep injection rate, drive water flow and mixing ratio within declared limits.
The application unit requirements in 4.3 include pressure indication, pressure drop control and nozzle performance. Nozzles must be fixed in predetermined positions, must not drip after shut-off, and their individual flow rates must stay close to the declared data. Horizontal booms have specific requirements for working width, boom height adjustment and spray distribution. Vertical and other non-horizontal booms must be adjustable to crop conditions, with independent shut-off and direction adjustment, and air-assisted systems must keep air flow within the declared range and reasonably symmetrical where symmetrical application is intended.
Autonomous application units have extra controls: they must stop movement when spray flow ceases, or when pressure or speed moves outside the permitted range. Their measured volume per area must stay within the stated tolerance during spraying, independent of tank fill level. Clause 4.3.8 also requires measures to reduce spray drift as far as practicable and to describe those measures in the operator’s manual.
Cleaning and residue control
Clause 4.4 is aimed at keeping cleaning from becoming a source of contamination. If a rinse water tank is provided, it must be separate from the operator’s clean water tank and large enough for rinsing and dilution of residues. The standard also requires the sprayer to be cleanable internally and externally without unnecessary environmental contamination.
After cleaning, residue concentration must be reduced by a factor of 300 compared with the starting concentration. That gives a clear benchmark for whether the cleaning system actually removes product, not just moves it around.
Clause 4.5 covers plant protection product container cleaning devices. When these are fitted, the remaining residue after cleaning must be extremely small, and rinsing water must be transferred to the spray tank without spillage.
Verification, marking and instructions
Clause 5 says the requirements are verified by visual inspection, measurement or functional testing, and Table 3 summarizes which method applies to each subclause. Clause 6 points back to ISO 16119-1 for marking, and Clause 7 does the same for the operator’s manual, with extra information on speed limits, crop adjustment, drift reduction, fan setting, rinse-water arrangements and pump flow rate.
What terms does prEN ISO 16119-4 define?
prEN ISO 16119-4 uses the vocabulary of ISO 5681 and adds a few key terms of its own.
- Module - a stand-alone device that is not a sprayer by itself, but becomes one when combined with compatible modules; this supports separate testing of different manufacturers’ parts.
- Residual volume - the liquid left in the system after emptying, which is limited because leftover product can increase environmental contamination.
- Direct injection system - a system that meters plant protection product into the spray water stream, so its accuracy and backflow control directly affect dose quality.
- Rinse water tank - a separate tank for rinsing liquid, used to clean the sprayer and dilute residues without contaminating the operator’s clean water supply.
- Working pressure - the pressure at which the sprayer operates during application, used as the reference for pressure stability, pulsation and nozzle checks.
- Pressure indicator - the analog or digital device used to read working pressure, which must be readable, stable and accurate enough for set-up and verification.
Who uses prEN ISO 16119-4?
prEN ISO 16119-4 is used by sprayer manufacturers, design engineers, test laboratories, conformity assessors and quality managers working with agricultural and forestry spraying equipment. It is also relevant to operators and maintenance staff because it specifies the filling, cleaning, adjustment and manual information needed for safe environmental performance.
The standard is especially relevant where fixed installations or semi-mobile systems are used for crop protection products and where overfilling, residue, drift and cleaning losses need to be controlled.

Introduction
The requirements of this part of EN ISO 16119 are based on the test methods given in ISO 5682-2:1997,
which were primarily developed for hydraulic sprayers. For other types of sprayers, other test methods and/
or test criteria may be needed and may be the subject of future investigation and a revision of this part of EN
ISO 16119.
This document is a type C standard as stated in EN ISO 12100.
The machinery concerned and the extent to which hazards, hazardous situations and hazardous events are
covered are indicated in the scope of this document.
When provisions of this type C standard are different from those which are stated in type A or B standards,
the provisions of this type C standard take precedence over the provisions of the other standards, for
machines that have been designed and built according to the provisions of this type C standard.

Part 4:
Fixed and semi-mobile sprayers
1 Scope
This part of EN ISO 16119 specifies requirements and the means for their verification for the design
and performance of fixed and semi-mobile sprayers, with regard to minimizing the potential risk of
environmental contamination during use, including misuse foreseeable by the manufacturer.
This type of spraying system is generally a combination of separate elements (main tank, pump and
application unit) that can be assembled in fixed installations (fixed sprayers) or with moving parts (semi-
mobile sprayers).
It does not apply to sprayers with thermal droplet production and foggers, in particular if they are intended
to be application equipment for space/spatial treatments.
It is intended to be used with EN ISO 16119-1, which gives general requirements common to all the sprayer
types covered by EN ISO 16119. When requirements of this part of EN ISO 16119 are different from
those stated in EN ISO 16119-1, the requirements of this part of EN ISO 16119 take precedence over the
requirements of EN ISO 16119-1 for machines within the scope of this part of EN ISO 16119. This part of EN
ISO 16119 does not cover safety aspects (see EN ISO 4254-6).
This part of EN ISO 16119 is not applicable to sprayers manufactured before the date of its publication.

Strainers shall be installed in filling openings and shall have a mesh size less than 2 mm. Any gap(s) between
the tank filling hole and the strainer shall not exceed 2 mm (see Figure 1).
Strainers shall have a minimum depth, d, as given in Table 1 and measured according to Figure 1.
The filling capacity of the tank with strainer when filled with water shall be at least 100 l/min for tanks with
a nominal volume of 100 l or more. For tanks with a nominal volume of less than 100 l, it shall be possible to
fill the tank within 1 min.
Induction hoppers, if any, shall comply with ISO 21278-2.

4.1.3.2.2 Fixed sprayers
Filling devices shall be designed to avoid any return of liquid from the tank to the filling supply.
A tank cover shall be present to prevent objects falling in. The tank cover may be provided with a filling hole.
Any filling hole shall be designed in such a way that splashing and spillage of the spray liquid during filling is
avoided. The tank cover shall be lockable to avoid unexpected opening.
The total tank volume shall be at least 5 % or 200 l more than its nominal volume, to prevent spillage as a
result of overfilling. For the second option, the 200 l extra volume, an automatically operated shut-off valve
and digital tank level sensor are required to prevent overfilling. Tanks with a nominal volume greater than
200 l shall have a nominal volume which is a multiple of 100 l.
The filling capacity of the tank when filled with water shall be at least 100 l/min for tanks with a nominal
volume of 100 l or more. For tanks with a nominal volume of less than 100 l, it shall be possible to fill the
tank within 1 min.
Sprayers shall be equipped with a mean for introducing chemical products , see EN ISO 4254-6:20XX.
ISO/DIS 16119-4:2026(en)
4.1.3.3 Tank emptying device
An emptying device in accordance with EN ISO 4254-6:20XX, 5.4.3 shall allow the complete emptying of
the residual in the tank when the sprayer is in a horizontal position. Complete emptying of the residual is
considered to have been achieved when there are no visible puddles at the bottom of the tank after 5 min
drainage.
It shall be possible to collect the liquid at the outlet without contaminating the environment or equipment
part, e.g. steps and without potential risk of exposure of the operator, e.g. using a tap.
The tank outlet shall be guarded against accidental opening.
4.1.3.4 Tank contents indicator(s)
The indication of contents shall correspond to ISO 9357. It shall be durable and easily readable from where
the tank is filled.
The acceptable tolerances of the indication are:
a) ±15 % for each graduation mark/read-out for volumes up to 10 % of the nominal tank volume;
b) ±7,5 % for each graduation mark/read-out for volumes from 10 % to 20 % of the nominal tank volume;
and
c) ±5 % for each graduation mark/read-out for volumes above 20 % of the nominal tank volume.
Other means of visually checking the contents of the tank are allowed if they achieve equivalent accuracy.
The tolerances shall be measured with a maximum error on measurement of ±1 %, with the sprayer in a
horizontal position.
A digital tank level indicator shall be mandatory when automatic shut-off valve is used for overfilling
prevention as specified (see 4.1.3.2.2).
4.1.3.5 Mixing
Tanks shall be designed (e.g. including agitators) to ensure an even concentration of mixture.
The maximum allowable relative deviation of tank and spraying concentrations is ±15 %, tested in
accordance with ISO 5682-4, When pump backflow is necessary to meet this requirement, the minimum
value to meet this requirement shall be measured according to Annex A and specified in the operator’s
manual.
4.1.4 Pump
The capacity of the pump shall be suited to the needs of the sprayer. The pump shall have sufficient flow
rate capacity to be able to spray within the operating limits specified in the sprayer operator’s manual and
maintaining an even concentration of mixture at level required in 4.1.3.5. The flow rate of pump shall be
measured according to ISO 12908:2020, 7.3.2.1 and specified in the operator’s manual (see Clause 7).
The pump (including air chamber if present) shall not cause pulsations that exceed 5 % of the working
pressure, measured on the application unit at nominal rotation speed of the pump at the intended working
pressure.
4.1.5 Lines (hoses and pipes)
The bending radius of hoses shall be within the limits recommended by the hose manufacturer. Pipes and
hoses shall not have any deformation which could disturb the liquid flow.
Pressure lines shall be equipped with quick-acting shut-off devices (e.g. tip-over lever valves).
