Overview

EN ISO 4254-7:2017/A1:2026 is a European and International Standard amendment focusing on safety requirements for agricultural machinery, specifically: combine harvesters, forage harvesters, cotton harvesters, and sugar cane harvesters. Developed under the CEN and ISO frameworks, this amendment integrates updates to safety performance and aligns closely with the essential requirements of Directive 2006/42/EC (Machinery Directive). Its adoption helps manufacturers and operators reduce risks of injury, support regulatory compliance, and ensure safe operation and maintenance of harvesting equipment.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Machinery Covered

    • The amendment applies to a range of harvesting machines, including combine harvesters, forage harvesters, cotton harvesters, and sugar cane harvesters.
  • Updated Safety Requirements

    • Enhanced measures for operator protection, focusing on the risks associated with rotating functional elements such as cutterheads, blowers, and crop processors.
    • New provisions ensuring infeed drive cannot be engaged before the cutterhead drive.
    • Automatic disengagement requirements for rotating components when the operator leaves the workstation, plus visual warnings if components remain engaged.
  • Maintenance and Service Provisions

    • Safety instructions and prescribed operation modes for maintenance activities involving active rotating elements.
    • Permanent display of active operation modes at the operator’s workstation for increased safety awareness.
  • Run-down Controls

    • Limitation of run-down time for rotating functional elements to a maximum of 10 seconds, or use of interlocked safety guards as per ISO 12100.
    • Devices for limiting run-down time must activate automatically, even if the engine is off.
  • Conformance to European Legislation

    • Clear mapping to essential safety and health requirements of the EU Machinery Directive.

Applications

  • Manufacturers of Harvesting Machinery

    • Design and construction: Integrate the safety updates from this amendment in new models and during product redesigns.
    • Documentation: Provide clear instructions in operator manuals regarding safety controls, maintenance procedures, and hazard prevention.
  • Operators and Owners

    • Safe operation: Follow prescribed procedures for using and maintaining harvesters, adhering to new safety features and warnings.
    • Training: Educate and train operators on updated safety measures, especially concerning engagement/disengagement sequences and run-down controls.
  • Compliance and Certification

    • Presumption of conformity: Use this standard as a reference to demonstrate compliance with Directive 2006/42/EC, supporting product certification and access to European markets.
    • Regulatory inspections: Facilitate checks by authorities by demonstrating adherence to internationally harmonized safety controls.

Related Standards

These referenced standards are integral for full compliance with EN ISO 4254-7:2017/A1:2026 and fostering a holistic safety culture in agricultural machinery:

  • ISO 4254-1: General requirements for agricultural machinery safety.
  • ISO 12100: Safety of machinery - General principles for risk assessment and risk reduction.
