Overview
EN 442-1:2014 - Radiators and convectors: Technical specifications and requirements is the CEN European Standard that defines the essential technical characteristics, performance requirements and manufacturer information for permanently installed radiators and convectors fed with water or steam (temperatures below 120 °C) and supplied by a remote energy source. It excludes independent (self‑contained) heating appliances. EN 442-1 also frames the information manufacturers must supply to ensure correct product application and supports conformity with the EU Construction Products Regulation.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and definitions: Types covered (plate, column, tubular, cast-iron, die‑cast/extruded aluminium, finned‑tube and skirting convectors), concepts like wet/dry heating surfaces, modules, types and families.
- Material and product characteristics: Dimensional tolerances, material specifications and minimum wall thicknesses for different materials, surface defects and reaction to fire requirements.
- Thermal performance: Declaration of rated thermal outputs, including the added requirement to declare low‑temperature thermal output (ΔT = 30 K).
- Safety and durability: Maximum operating temperature/pressure, surface temperature limits, resistance to pressure and durability expectations.
- Testing and verification: Required test methods for dimensions, reaction to fire, release of dangerous substances, pressure tightness, surface temperature, resistance to pressure, rated output tests and durability.
- Assessment and Verification of Constancy of Performance (AVCP): Type testing, test sample criteria, test reporting, Factory Production Control (FPC) requirements, initial inspection, continuous surveillance and procedures for modifications, one‑off or prototype products.
- Manufacturer information & identification: Mandatory product data, catalogue reference data, identification codes and instruction/safety information.
