prEN IEC 60598-2-4:2026 is a draft European standard for portable general purpose luminaires, based on IEC 60598-2-4. It sets particular safety requirements for luminaires used indoors, outdoors, or both, intended for electrical light sources on supply voltages not exceeding 250 V. Manufacturers, test laboratories, certification bodies, quality teams, and buyers use it to check design, marking, construction, and test evidence for these products.
What does prEN IEC 60598-2-4:2026 specify?
prEN IEC 60598-2-4:2026 specifies the particular requirements for portable general purpose luminaires and is used together with IEC 60598-1. It covers the extra requirements that apply to these luminaires beyond the general rules in Part 1.
The standard applies to portable luminaires for indoor use, outdoor use, or both. It excludes handlamps covered by IEC 60598-2-8 and portable luminaires for children covered by IEC 60598-2-10.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex AAA (informative) | Schedule of amended subclauses containing more serious or critical requirements that call for products to be retested |
The document is organized into clauses 1 to 17, covering scope, references, terms, general test requirements, classification, marking, construction, wiring, earthing, protection against electric shock, ingress protection, insulation and electric strength, creepage and clearance, endurance and thermal tests, heat/fire/tracking, and terminals. Figure 1 gives the symbol for portable luminaires marked “For indoor use only”.
What are the key requirements of prEN IEC 60598-2-4:2026?
prEN IEC 60598-2-4:2026 is mainly about how portable luminaires are classified, marked, built, and tested so they are safe in normal use. The practical effect is that a manufacturer must design the product, choose components, and plan testing around the exact intended use.
- Clause 4 says this part is used with IEC 60598-1:2024, and the clauses must be applied in a defined order. For luminaires with IP classification greater than IP20, the endurance, IP, thermal, and humidity tests must follow the sequence given. In practice, the test plan cannot be rearranged without changing the basis of assessment.
- Clause 5 classifies luminaires by intended use. Ordinary luminaires are for indoor use only, other luminaires may be marked for indoor use only, and unmarked other luminaires are treated as outdoor-use luminaires. Outdoor-use luminaires need IPX4 or higher and must be suitable for normally flammable mounting surfaces.
- Clause 6 covers marking. Indoor-only luminaires must carry the stated wording or symbol, and the symbol must be explained in the instructions. Where a luminaire has an incorporated socket-outlet, the maximum power from the supply cable rating must be marked near the outlet.
- Clause 7 covers construction. Flexible cords must be protected against damage during movement and adjustment, wiring must not rub against metal in a way that affects safety, and the luminaire must pass the stability check in the stated inclined positions. The clause also limits the use of E5 and E10 lampholders, sets a maximum power limit for those arrangements, limits cable entries for outdoor luminaires, and requires tracking-resistant materials in outdoor lampholders and plugs.
- Clause 8 covers external and internal wiring. It sets conditions for cord anchorage, a smaller conductor cross-section for certain light indoor Class I and Class II luminaires, and the fittings needed when an outdoor luminaire is supplied without a flexible cable or plug.
- Clause 10 adds protection against electric shock requirements for Class I luminaires with bayonet cap lampholders. The lamp cap must either be inaccessible to the standard test finger or the lampholder must be metallic and connected to protective earth.
- Clauses 11 and 14 define how moisture, endurance, and thermal tests are carried out for portable luminaires, including the most unfavorable overturned position for outdoor-use units and special support conditions for floor, table, pendant, and adjustable luminaires. That matters because the tests must reflect how the product will actually be placed or tipped in use.
What terms does prEN IEC 60598-2-4:2026 define?
prEN IEC 60598-2-4:2026 uses the terms and definitions from IEC 60598-1. A few terms are especially important for reading and applying this part.
- Luminaire - In this part, the word means a portable general purpose luminaire.
- Ordinary luminaire - A luminaire classified for indoor use only.
- Class I - A luminaire designed so protection relies on protective earth connection.
- Class II - A luminaire designed with double or reinforced insulation rather than protective earth.
- IPX4 - The ingress protection level used here as the minimum for outdoor-use luminaires.
- E5 lampholder - A lampholder type allowed only under the voltage and power conditions stated in Clause 7.
- E10 lampholder - A lampholder type with the voltage conditions stated in Clause 7 for series or parallel connection.
- PVC - Polyvinyl chloride, referred to in the marking and construction context for supply cords.
Who uses prEN IEC 60598-2-4:2026?
prEN IEC 60598-2-4:2026 is used by people who design, test, approve, and buy portable luminaires. That includes luminaire manufacturers, electrical design engineers, product safety teams, test laboratories, certification bodies, and procurement or quality managers.
It is especially relevant for products intended for indoor use, outdoor use, or both, such as portable lighting for general household, garden, and similar applications. These users rely on it to decide whether a product needs indoor-only marking, outdoor ingress protection, specific wiring arrangements, or particular safety testing.
What changed in prEN IEC 60598-2-4:2026 from the previous edition?
prEN IEC 60598-2-4:2026 cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2017. This fourth edition is a technical revision, and the note from the committee says it is a structural update aligned with IEC 60598-1:2024.
The stated changes are:
- clause numbers and structure aligned with IEC 60598-1;
- clarification of the stability test on an inclined plane so the luminaire does not slide;
- deletion of the clause on tails for portable luminaires for outdoor use;
- clarification that ingress protection must be maintained with and without a plug inserted into the socket-outlet;
- clarification of the design requirement to prevent loss of earthing to connected equipment;
- deletion of candlestick luminaire definitions and requirements as not safety-related.
Annex AAA states that no requirements in this document are considered more onerous than in the previous edition.
Which standards are used with prEN IEC 60598-2-4:2026?
prEN IEC 60598-2-4:2026 is used with IEC 60598-1:2024, which supplies the general requirements and tests for luminaires. This Part 2-4 builds on Part 1 and adds the portable general purpose luminaire requirements.
IEC 61032:1997 is also referenced. It provides the probes used for verification, including the jointed test finger used in the protection against electric shock check for bayonet cap lamps.
What does the prEN IEC 60598-2-4:2026 document contain?
prEN IEC 60598-2-4:2026 contains the clause structure for scope, references, terms, general test requirements, classification, marking, construction, wiring, earthing, electric shock protection, ingress protection, electrical strength, creepage and clearance, endurance and thermal testing, heat/fire/tracking, and terminals. It also contains Figure 1 for the indoor-use-only marking and Annex AAA for retest-impacting amendments.
The document shows where the Part 1 requirements are unchanged, where they are modified, and where extra requirements are added for portable luminaires. It is therefore a working document for design checks, type testing, and compliance review rather than a general lighting overview.
