Overview

The prEN IEC 63281-5-1:2026 standard, published by CLC, defines the interface requirements for autonomous cargo e-Transporters (ACeTs) and cloud platform scheduling systems. As the adoption of electric and autonomous cargo vehicles increases globally, unified interface protocols enable seamless communication, improve operational safety, and drive the efficiency of logistics processes across diverse electric road vehicle platforms. This standard addresses the lack of common interface protocols between cargo e-Transporters and cloud-based logistics management solutions, fostering interoperability and future growth in smart logistics.

Key Topics

  • Communication Protocols: The standard specifies the use of both MQTT (v3.1.1 or above) and HTTP/1.1 as application layer protocols, ensuring flexibility for varying bandwidth and system requirements.
  • Message Structure: Communication utilizes structured JSON messages based on ISO/IEC 21778, ensuring compatibility and readability across platforms.
  • Route Management:
    • Route Creation, Update, and Cancellation: The cloud platform generates route instructions, which ACeTs execute independently or semi-autonomously.
    • Execution Feedback: ACeTs systematically report execution status, position, and faults back to the cloud, supporting real-time monitoring and incident response.
  • Action and State Objects: The standard defines specific message objects for reporting vehicle states, handling exceptions (like route pauses or fault resets), and updating operational data (energy level, control mode, etc.).
  • Granularity and Flexibility: Route node granularity can be adjusted based on ACeT capabilities-from coarse (major intersections) to fine detail (meter-level accuracy).
  • Safety and Exception Handling: Guidelines are included for verifying route instructions, managing exceptions, and safely handling failures or deviations.

Applications

Implementing prEN IEC 63281-5-1:2026 provides practical benefits for:

  • Autonomous Logistics Fleets: Ensures that autonomous cargo vehicles from different manufacturers can interact reliably with central fleet management software, facilitating mixed-fleet operations.
  • Warehouse and Distribution Centers: Enables automated scheduling, execution, and supervision of material transport tasks, supporting just-in-time logistics and minimizing downtime.
  • Public Road Cargo Delivery: Standardizes safe interaction between autonomous vehicles and cloud platforms in urban, suburban, or industrial zones, critical for scaling last-mile delivery and autonomous supply chains.
  • Smart City Infrastructure: Provides foundational protocols for integration with broader smart transportation systems, including traffic management and urban mobility platforms.
  • Systems Integrators and OEMs: Reduces development effort by providing clear interface and protocol specifications, accelerating deployment and certification cycles.

Related Standards

For comprehensive compatibility and implementation, reference the following standards, which are normatively cited within prEN IEC 63281-5-1:2026:

INTRODUCTION
Standardization of "autonomous cargo e-Transporters": autonomous cargo electrically powered
transport devices for use on public roads or in public spaces. These e-Transporters provide
solutions for transporting goods.
These devices should be autonomous.
This document has been developed in response to an increased demand throughout the world
for Autonomous Cargo e-Transporters. The world market sizes and applications are expected
to grow significantly. To date, autonomous cargo e-Transporters have not had a complete and
unified standard of interface with cloud platform scheduling system. This has created
challenges for engineers, producers, operators, and other actors in the field of autonomous
cargo e-Transporters. The development of an interface standard applicable to autonomous
cargo e-Transporters, will promote the standardization of autonomous cargo e-Transporters,
aid the progress of technology, improve product quality, and increase safety.

1 Scope
This document specifies the communication protocol for the interface between autonomous
cargo e-Transporters as defined by IEC 63281-2-2 and cloud platform scheduling system,
including technical requirements such as message format, message transmission met hod.
This document mainly describes the communication protocol of the autonomous cargo e -
Transporters in terms of driving, including the creation, update, and cancellation of path
instructions issued by the cloud platform scheduling system, as well as the statu s feedback of
the autonomous cargo e-Transporters when executing path instructions and basic exception
handling messages.
