Introduction for national committees (not part of the proposal)
This CDV for a new Editon 3.0 of IEC 60598-2-11 provides a structural updating only of Edition
2.1 to align with the new IEC 60598-1:2024 Edition 10. As detailed by Annex AAA of this CDV,
no requirements of this document are considered more onerous compared with the previous
edition.

38 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
39 all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
40 co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
41 in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,

116 INTRODUCTION
117 Aquarium luminaires are predominantly used on the topside of an aquarium tank to achieve an
118 effective illumination and are, therefore, very close to the water inside the tank. Because
119 constant refilling of water is required as a consequence of evaporation and regular servicing,
120 e.g. feeding the fish, it is necessary to open the top cover or to remove the aquarium luminaire
121 frequently in order to have a good and sufficient access to the water surface.
122 The requirements of this standard are necessary to prevent any dangerous contact between
123 current-carrying parts of the aquarium luminaire and the water inside the tank during refilling or
124 maintenance. Another aspect is to prevent any accidental immersion of the aquarium luminaire
125 into the water.

134 1 Scope
135 This part of IEC 60598 specifies requirements for household aquarium purpose luminaires for
136 use with electric light sources on supply voltages not exceeding 1 000 V.
137 NOTE In the U.S., electrical equipment used on or in aquariums must be supplied by voltages not exceeding 300 V.
