Overview

EN 61549:2003/A1:2005 is a European standard published by CLC, aligned with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard IEC 61549:2003/A1:2005. This standard covers specifications and amendments related to miscellaneous lamps, supplementing existing lamp standards where specific lamp types or details are not addressed. It focuses on both safety and performance criteria for various less common lamp designs used in electrical and electronic lighting applications.

The standard includes detailed data sheets for different lamp categories, providing essential dimensional, marking, and symbol guidelines to ensure interoperability, safety, and proper mounting. EN 61549:2003/A1:2005 aims to support manufacturers, designers, and regulatory bodies by providing harmonized technical requirements that facilitate consistent product quality and conformity assessment across CENELEC member countries.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Miscellaneous Lamps
EN 61549:2003/A1:2005 covers lamps or related information not specified in other IEC lamp standards. This broad scope ensures that uncommon or specialized lighting products comply with standardized safety and performance practices.

  • Safety and Performance Compliance
Lamps covered by this standard must meet relevant safety norms where available. This ensures protection for users and reliable lamp operation.

  • Data Sheet System
The standard uses a modular data sheet format with unique numbering for each lamp type or specification area, facilitating easy reference and updates. Each sheet includes:

    • Dimensional requirements (e.g., for double-capped metal halide or incandescent lamps)
    • Symbol specifications for safety warnings (e.g., radiation hazard, protection against water contact)
    • Marking details such as filament position and identification marks for special lamp types
  • Examples of Data Sheets Included

    • Double-capped metal halide lamps dimensions (Fc2 caps)
    • Double-capped incandescent lamps dimensions (S15s, S14s caps)
    • Germicidal lamps and hazard symbols
    • Fluorescent lamps with specific cap designs
    • Xenon flash lamps for film and television use
  • Amendment A1 Integration
The Amendment A1 introduced in 2005 updates the 2003 edition to reflect latest technical consensus and corrections, ensuring up-to-date accuracy.

Applications

  • Lighting Product Design and Manufacturing
Ensures design conformity to international dimensions and marking, enabling manufacturers to produce lamps compatible with standardized lampholders and safety standards.

  • Safety Labeling and User Information
Provides uniform symbols and marking requirements that help users and installers recognize hazards such as radiation risks or water contact warnings, improving safety.

  • Regulatory and Certification Processes
National bodies and compliance testing labs use EN 61549:2003/A1:2005 as part of their certification criteria for specialty lamps, helping enforce consistent quality and safety levels.

  • Specialized Lighting Sectors
Includes lamps used in medical, film, television, germicidal applications, and other niche areas where precise lamp characteristics and safety information are critical.

  • Cross-border Trade and Market Access
Harmonization under CENELEC facilitates seamless international trade of lamps within European countries by aligning national standards with EN 61549.

Related Standards

  • IEC 60061 Series – Lamp caps and holders dimensions that EN 61549 references for cap types and fitting details.
  • IEC 34-34A – Pertains to lamps and related equipment, linked to the technical committee responsible for this standard.
  • Other IEC Lamp Standards – EN 61549 supplements other IEC publications covering fluorescent, incandescent, and discharge lamps.
  • ISO/IEC Directives Part 2 – Governs the drafting of IEC standards including amendments like EN 61549:2003/A1:2005 for consistency and quality.
