Overview
The EN 50382-2:2008/A1:2013 standard, published by CLC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization), specifies requirements for railway rolling stock high temperature power cables with specialized fire performance. This Part 2 of the series focuses on single core silicone rubber insulated cables rated for continuous operation at temperatures of 120 °C or 150 °C. These cables are engineered for reliable performance in demanding railway environments where fire safety and high thermal resistance are critical.
This amendment (A1) updates the original 2008 standard to clarify temperature ratings and compliance details, effective for implementation from April 2014. The standard ensures consistent safety, quality, and interoperability of cables used in railway applications across European member states.
Key Topics
Scope of Application
Covers single core silicone rubber insulated power cables used in railway rolling stock that require enhanced fire resistance and high temperature operation (up to 120 °C by default, extendable to 150 °C by agreement).Temperature Ratings
Standard specifies cables designed for continuous operating temperatures of either 120 °C or 150 °C, with provisions for tinned conductors to reach higher temperature limits through purchaser-manufacturer agreement.Fire Performance
Emphasizes “special fire performance” to limit fire propagation, crucial for safety in railway vehicles.Material Specifications
Details use of silicone rubber for insulation to withstand elevated temperatures while maintaining electrical and mechanical integrity.Compliance and Implementation
Outlines national adoption deadlines and withdrawal of conflicting standards. Includes reference to patent considerations related to cable technologies.Multilingual and Multi-National Applicability
Documents are available in English, French, and German, with scope covering all CENELEC member countries for standardized use.
Applications
The EN 50382-2:2008/A1:2013 standard is essential for manufacturers, designers, and operators in the railway sector requiring:
- High temperature power cables for onboard electrical systems capable of continuous operation in hot or fire-prone environments.
- Fire-safe cable solutions to minimize risks of ignition and limit fire propagation within rolling stock interiors.
- Single core silicone rubber insulated cables for power distribution, control circuits, or instrumentation wiring on trains, trams, and metro cars.
- Compliance with European railway safety and interoperability regulations to ensure network-wide acceptance.
Industries and stakeholders benefiting from this standard include:
- Railway vehicle manufacturers
- Electrical cable producers
- Safety certification bodies
- Maintenance and retrofit service providers
Related Standards
EN 50382-2:2008/A1:2013 is part of a larger portfolio of railway cable standards and is related to:
- EN 50382-1: Covers multi-core cables with similar fire performance and temperature ratings.
- IEC 61375 Series: General standards for onboard electrical systems in railway vehicles.
- EN 45545: Railway applications - fire protection on railway vehicles (fire hazard testing).
- Other CENELEC standards on electrical cables and railway vehicle components.
