Overview - ISO 245:1998 (Aerospace - Lockwire - Diameters)
ISO 245:1998 is the International Standard that defines the diameters of lockwire used in the aerospace industry. Published as the second edition in March 1998, it was prepared by ISO/TC 20 (Aircraft and space vehicles), Subcommittee SC 4 (Aerospace fastener systems). The standard is intended for use in the compilation of aerospace product standards and provides dimensional requirements referenced by designers, manufacturers and quality authorities. Dimensions and tolerances in the document are expressed in millimetres and are illustrated in an accompanying figure and table.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope: Specifies the nominal diameters and associated tolerances for lockwire used in aerospace applications.
- Configuration and dimensions: Includes a figure (figure 1) and a tabulated listing (table 1) showing the accepted lockwire diameters and the permitted tolerances.
- Units and tolerances: All dimensions and tolerances are given in millimetres to ensure consistency across product specifications and manufacturing.
- Standard maintenance: This edition cancels and replaces the 1986 edition (ISO 245:1986), indicating an update to the technical requirements.
Note: ISO 245:1998 focuses specifically on diameters. It does not cover material specification, manufacturing methods, or installation procedures for lockwire.
Applications and Who Uses This Standard
ISO 245:1998 is directly useful for professionals involved in aerospace fastener selection and documentation:
- Aerospace design engineers specifying lockwire diameters for assemblies and lockwire holes in components.
- Fastener and wire manufacturers producing lockwire to fit aerospace specifications.
- Procurement and supply-chain teams ensuring received lockwire matches specified diameters and tolerances.
- Quality assurance and inspection personnel verifying compliance with dimensional tolerances.
- Maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) organizations standardizing replacement parts and procedures.
Practical uses include specifying lockwire sizes on engineering drawings, defining acceptance criteria for incoming inspection, and harmonizing supplier product data to prevent misfits or functional failures.
Related Standards
ISO 245:1998 is part of the body of standards addressing aerospace fastener systems prepared by ISO/TC 20/SC 4. For complete product specifications, it is typically used alongside other aerospace standards covering fastener dimensions, materials, installation practices and quality requirements. When creating or auditing aerospace product documents, reference ISO 245:1998 for diameter requirements and consult related fastener and material standards for full guidance.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which
a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented
on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-
governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard ISO 245 was prepared by Technical Committee
ISO/TC 20, Aircraft and space vehicles, Subcommittee SC 4, Aerospace
fastener systems.
