Foreword
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of
national standards institutes (IS0 member bodies). The work of developing Inter-
national Standards is carried out through IS0 technical committees. Every member
body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been set up has the
right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to
the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by
the IS0 Council.
International Standard IS0 4226 was developed by Technical Committee ISO/TC 146,
Air quality, and was circulated to the member bodies in August 1977.
It has been approved by the member bodies of the following countries :

O Introduction
The series of International Standards on air quality includes the standardization of methods for the measurement of gases, vapours
and particles. In order to enable results to be compared either within or between countries, it is essential to use agreed units of
measurement to report the results and other relevant information so that sound conclusions may be drawn. It is also desirable to keep
the number of units of measurement to a minimum.
Special consideration was given to proposals to include the unit "parts per million" (ppmi in view of its importance in previous records
and its independence of changes in temperature and pressure. However

L’ISO (organisation internationale de normalisation) est une fédération mondiale
d‘organismes nationaux de normalisation (comités membres de I‘ISO). L‘élaboration
des Normes internationales est confiée aux comités techniques de I’ISO. Chaque
comité membre intéressé par une étude a le droit de faire partie du comité technique
correspondant. Les organisations internationales, gouvernementales et non gouverne-
mentales, en liaison avec I’ISO, participent également aux travaux.
Les projets de Normes internationales adoptés par les comités techniques sont soumis
aux comités membres pour approbation, avant leur acceptation comme Normes inter-

O Introduction
La série de Normes internationales sur la qualité de l'air comprend la normalisation des méthodes de mesurage des gaz, des vapeurs et
des particules. Afin que les résultats puissent être comparés entre eux, soit à l'intérieur d'un même pays, soit entre pays, il est indis-
pensable d'exprimer, dans des unités de mesure admises, les résultats et d'autres informations appropriées, afin que des conclusions
valables puissent être tirées. Il est aussi préférable de réduire le plus possible le nombre d'unités de mesure retenues.
Une attention particulière a été accordée aux propositions visant à inclure l'unité ((parties par million)) (ppm) dans la présente Norme
internationale, compte tenu de son importance dans les rapports antérieurs et de son indépendance vis-à-vis des variations de tempé-
