Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described

the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) Technical Committee CEN/TC 444, Environmental
characterization of solid matrices, in accordance with the Agreement on technical cooperation between ISO
and CEN (Vienna Agreement).
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 11074:2015), which has been technically
revised. It also incorporates the Amendment ISO 11074:2015/Amd 1:2020.
The main changes are as follows:
— terminological entries have been reorganised with all the terms and definitions placed in Clause 3 in
alphabetical order;
— terms that have different definitions depending on the context have been grouped, and the domain field
has been added in angle brackets to differentiate them.

Introduction
This document defines soil quality terms. The previous editions (ISO 11074:2015 and ISO 11074/Amd 1:2020)
presented terms and definitions in separate clauses to differentiate the terms about e.g. sampling,
remediation. This became more and more artificial, since soil quality experts with different expertise need
to work closely together and there is a greater need for one term list instead of multiple ones, where experts
first need to find out in which clause a specific term is located. In this edition, all the terms are included in
Clause 3.
For some terms, there are different definitions, depending on the context. These terms are presented after
each other, with the differentiating domains between brackets: . Often these are a general domain
and a specific domain, resulting in different definitions.
Though the terms apply to all other ISO/TC 190 soil quality standards, this document does not cover all the
terms used in ISO/TC 190 soil quality standards.
New and revised standards are published continuously though time. The revision periods of soil quality
standards differ. That means that definitions of the same terms can be different in specific soil quality
standard and in this document.

Avant-propos
L'ISO (Organisation internationale de normalisation) est une fédération mondiale d'organismes nationaux
de normalisation (comités membres de l'ISO). L'élaboration des Normes internationales est en général
confiée aux comités techniques de l'ISO. Chaque comité membre intéressé par une étude a le droit de faire
partie du comité technique créé à cet effet. Les organisations internationales, gouvernementales et non
gouvernementales, en liaison avec l'ISO participent également aux travaux. L'ISO collabore étroitement avec
la Commission électrotechnique internationale (IEC) en ce qui concerne la normalisation électrotechnique. *
Les procédures utilisées pour élaborer le présent document et celles destinées à sa mise à jour sont
décrites dans les Directives ISO/IEC, Partie 1. Il convient, en particulier, de prendre note des différents
critères d’approbation requis pour les différents types de documents ISO. Le présent document
a été rédigé conformément aux règles de rédaction données dans les Directives ISO/IEC, Partie 2

Le présent document a été élaboré par le comité technique ISO/TC 190, Qualité du sol, en collaboration avec
le comité technique CEN/TC 444, Caractérisation environnementale des matrices solides, du Comité européen
de normalisation (CEN) conformément à l’Accord de coopération technique entre l’ISO et le CEN (Accord de
Vienne).
Cette troisième édition annule et remplace la deuxième édition (ISO 11074:2015), qui a fait l’objet d’une
révision technique. Elle incorpore également l'Amendement ISO 11074:2015/Amd 1:2020.
Les principales modifications sont les suivantes:
— réorganisation des entrées terminologiques, la totalité des termes et définitions figurant, par ordre
alphabétique, à l’Article 3;
— regroupement des termes dont les définitions diffèrent en fonction du contexte, avec ajout du domaine
spécialisé entre crochets angulaires pour les distinguer.
Il convient que l’utilisateur adresse tout retour d’information ou toute question concernant le présent
document à l’organisme national de normalisation de son pays. Une liste exhaustive desdits organismes se

Introduction
Le présent document définit les termes relatifs à la qualité du sol. Les éditions précédentes (ISO 11074:2015
et ISO 11074/Amd 1:2020) présentaient les termes et les définitions au sein d'articles distincts afin d'établir
différentes catégories de termes ayant trait à l'échantillonnage ou à la dépollution, par exemple. Cette
distinction est devenue de plus en plus artificielle dans la mesure où une collaboration étroite entre experts
de la qualité du sol, aux domaines de compétence variés, s'avère nécessaire; une liste unique de termes
devient de ce fait incontournable pour remplacer les subdivisions qui obligent les experts à rechercher
d'abord dans quel article se trouve un terme spécifique. Dans la présente édition, tous les termes sont inclus
dans l’Article 3.
Certains termes ont des définitions différentes en fonction du contexte. Ils sont présentés les uns à la suite
des autres, leurs domaines respectifs étant indiqués entre crochets angulaires: . Il s'agit dans la
plupart des cas d'un domaine général et d'un domaine spécifique, donnant lieu à des définitions différentes.
Bien que ces termes s'appliquent à toutes les autres normes relevant de l'ISO/TC 190, Qualité du sol, le présent
document ne couvre pas la totalité des termes utilisés dans les normes sur la qualité du sol relevant de
l'ISO/TC 190.
La publication de nouvelles normes et de normes révisées est continuelle. Les périodes de révision des
normes relatives à la qualité du sol sont différées, ce qui signifie que les définitions de termes identiques
peuvent présenter des différences dans une norme spécifique sur la qualité du sol et dans le présent
document.
