Overview

EN 1870-10:2003/prA1 (CEN draft amendment, 2009) is a safety standard for woodworking machines - specifically single blade automatic and semi-automatic up‑cutting cross‑cut circular sawing machines. It addresses the significant hazards, hazardous situations and events identified by risk assessment for machines designed to cut solid wood, chipboard, fibreboard, plywood and these materials when laminated or edged. The amendment updates normative references to current ISO/CENELEC documents and aligns the standard with EU Machinery Directive requirements (informative Annexes ZA and ZB).

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and risk assessment: Defines the machine types covered and lists significant hazards (Table 1) in line with EN 1050 and EN ISO 12100.
  • Mechanical safety: Requirements for guarding, workpiece guides, stability, spindle locking and protection against cutting, crushing, drawing‑in and impact hazards.
  • Control systems and functional safety: Safety and reliability of control systems, start/stop behaviour, emergency stop requirements and failure modes (references include EN ISO 13849-1 and EN ISO 13850).
  • Electrical safety and EMC: Electrical equipment requirements and immunity/emission considerations (EN 60204-1, EN 50370 series).
  • Ergonomics and human factors: Design of controls, displays and handling to reduce operator error and musculoskeletal risk (EN 894 series, EN 1005 series).
  • Hazards from materials and environment: Dust and harmful substance control, fire risk, noise and radiation (including laser safety EN 60825-1 where applicable).
  • Maintenance, marking and documentation: Obligations for machine marking, instruction handbooks and supplier information to support safe operation and maintenance.
  • Normative references update: The amendment modernises references (e.g., EN ISO 12100‑1/2, EN ISO 13857, EN ISO 13849‑1) to reflect current international safety practice.

Practical applications - who uses this standard

  • Machine manufacturers and OEMs designing and producing circular sawing machines for cross‑cutting.
  • Safety and compliance engineers responsible for CE marking and conformity to the Machinery Directive (98/37/EC / 2006/42/EC).
  • Plant safety managers, risk assessors and maintenance teams who implement guarding, control and maintenance procedures.
  • Test laboratories and notified bodies performing safety assessments and type testing.
  • Procurement specialists and machine buyers who need to specify safety requirements for up‑cutting cross‑cut sawing equipment.

Benefits and keywords

Adoption of EN 1870-10:2003/prA1 helps reduce cutting, entanglement and electrical hazards, ensures reliable emergency stop and control behaviour, and improves operator ergonomics - supporting safer production in woodworking. Key search terms: EN 1870-10:2003/prA1, safety of woodworking machines, circular sawing machines, single blade, up‑cutting cross‑cut, machine safety, control systems, CE marking, Machinery Directive.

Related standards

Relevant referenced standards updated in the amendment include:

  • EN ISO 12100-1 / -2 (risk assessment / design principles)
  • EN ISO 13849-1 (safety‑related parts of control systems)
  • EN ISO 13850 (emergency stop)
