Packaging - Complete, filled transport packages - Toppling test (ISO 8768:1986)

This International Standard specifies a method for carrying out a toppling test on a complete, filled transport package which may be exposed to the danger of toppling during storage, transport and handling. The test may be used to assess the performance of a package in terms of its strength or the protection that it offers to its contents when it is subject to toppling. lt may be performed either as a Single test to investigate the effects of toppling or as patt of a sequence of tests designed to measure the ability of the package to withstand a distribution System that includes a toppling hazard.
The test, which is complementary to the tests described in ISO 2244, ISO 2248 and ISO 2876, may be used to investigate the Performance of packages which are tall in relation to their base dimensions. lt is also applicable to packages the height of which is small by comparison with base dimensions but which may be stored or transported resting on a side face in Order to conserve storage/transport space (sec figures 1 and 2). The test is recommended for packages where the ratio of the longest to the shortest sides is of the Order of 3 : 1 or greater.

La présente Norme internationale spécifie une méthode d'essai de basculement des emballages d'expédition complets et pleins qui peuvent être exposés au danger de basculement durant le stockage, le transport et la manutention. Un tel essai peut être utilisé pour évaluer les caractéristiques d'un emballage en fonction de sa résistance ou de la protection qu'il offre a son contenu lorsqu'il est soumis au basculement. II peut être effectué comme essai simple dans le but d'examiner les effets de ce basculement, ou il peut faire partie d'une série d'essais destinés à mesurer la résistance d'un emballage dans un système de distribution qui comprend un risque de basculement.
Cet essai, qui est complémentaire aux essais décrits dans I'ISO 2244, I'ISO 2248 et I'ISO 2876, peut être utilisé pour évaluer les caractéristiques des emballages de grande hauteur par rapport à leurs dimensions de base. II peut également s'appliquer aux emballages dont la hauteur est petite comparativement aux dimensions de base mais qui peuvent être stockes ou transportés en étant posés sur un côté dans le but d'optimiser l'encombrement en stockage ou en transport (voir figures 1 et 2). L'essai est recommandé pour des emballages dont le rapport du côté le plus long au côté le plus court est de l'ordre de 3 : 1 ou supérieur.
